brasserie-ville-de-paris-vintage-beer-poster-1921
Brasserie Ville de Paris Vintage Beer Poster, 1921

Brasserie Ville de Paris, 35 avenue de la Défense, Puteaux, created in 1921 by Imp. J. Minot, turns a simple glass of beer into a theatrical apparition. A monumental mug rises at the centre of the poster, its golden contents and overflowing white head set against a deep blue ground. Two pale, airborne figures emerge from the foam, their flowing hair dissolving into its curves, while the brasserie’s name commands the upper edge in emphatic lettering.

The poster belongs to a period when illustrated advertising was an integral part of French urban visual culture. Commercial designs needed to be understood at a glance, whether encountered on a wall, in a shopfront or amid the competing signs of a busy street. Here, practical information—the name and address of the establishment—is combined with an extravagant central fantasy. The result sells more than a beverage: it gives the Brasserie Ville de Paris an instantly recognisable identity, modern in its clarity yet playful in its imagery.

A closer look

The composition is organised around strong concentric forms. The beer mug occupies the central axis, encircled by a thick red band that contains the design and intensifies the contrast between warm and cool colour. Repeated blue dots enliven the outer edge, creating a decorative rhythm around the otherwise solid border. Within this frame, the saturated navy background pushes the luminous yellows, whites and light flesh tones sharply forwards.

Much of the poster’s energy gathers at the rim of the mug. Foam swells and spills over the glass, curling into clouds around the two figures. Their bodies appear almost weightless beside the substantial vessel; hair, limbs and froth overlap so closely that the boundary between figure and drink becomes deliberately unstable. Small highlights give the beer and glass a sense of volume, while the shadow beneath the mug provides an anchoring note of weight.

The typography supplies a disciplined counterpoint to this exuberance. “BRASSERIE ‘VILLE DE PARIS’” stretches prominently across the top, while “35 AVENUE DE LA DÉFENSE PUTEAUX” and “TÉL: 12” are placed clearly below the central motif. These bold, direct letterforms establish an immediate hierarchy: first the business name, then the memorable spectacle of the overflowing mug, and finally the information required to find or contact the establishment. The discreet “Imp. J. Minot” at the lower edge records the maker without disturbing the principal message.

Context and significance

French beverage advertising of the early twentieth century often relied on simplification, high colour contrast and a single enlarged object capable of registering from a distance. This 1921 design follows that commercial logic, but its floating figures make the proposition unusually fanciful. Rather than presenting the brasserie interior or its customers, Imp. J. Minot builds the entire appeal around abundance: the beer does not merely fill its mug but surges beyond it, generating movement and animation.

The address grounds that fantasy in a precise locality—35 avenue de la Défense in Puteaux—while the name “Ville de Paris” lends the establishment a metropolitan flourish. That tension between exact information and exuberant invention is what gives the poster its enduring graphic interest. It remains at once an advertisement for a specific business and a vivid document of the wit, immediacy and decorative ambition of French commercial design in the years after the First World War.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
