WeiterlesenPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Indica, published between 1817 and 1824, sets a flowering rose stem against an expanse of warm, pale ground. Two fully opened red blooms command the centre, their layered petals shifting from deep crimson to softer, light-touched edges; a smaller flower and an unopened bud extend the plant’s vertical rhythm. The composition is at once botanically lucid and carefully poised, balancing abundant foliage with generous areas of empty space.
Redouté was among the most celebrated flower painters of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, admired for illustrations that united scientific description with unusual decorative refinement. Working for aristocratic patrons and major botanical publications, he belonged to a culture in which the classification and cultivation of plants were closely entwined with collecting, scholarship and taste. Rosa Indica exemplifies his ability to make a specimen readily legible without reducing it to a diagram: the rose is presented as an object of study, but also as a living form with weight, delicacy and individual character.
A closer look
The two principal flowers are shown at subtly different angles. One opens broadly towards the viewer, revealing a small yellow centre surrounded by densely overlapping petals; the other turns slightly away, allowing its outer petals to describe the rounded structure of the bloom. Minute transitions between scarlet, carmine and paler red give the petals volume, while their irregular edges prevent the flowers from appearing overly formal. The smaller bloom in the upper part of the arrangement provides a visual counterpoint to the fuller roses below.
A network of slender stems carries the eye through the composition. The lower stem curves upwards from the left before branching among serrated leaves, while faint thorn-like projections add a further note of botanical specificity. The leaves are not treated as a uniform mass: some are fresh, light green, others deeper and more shadowed, with fine pale veins tracing their internal structure. Delicate linear marks, hatching and stippled passages articulate their surfaces without disturbing the airy character of the plate.
Near the base, an unopened bud introduces another stage in the plant’s development. This modest detail expands the study beyond the spectacle of flowers in full bloom, allowing bud, stem, leaf and open rose to be considered together. Along the lower edge, the names “Rosa Indica” and “Rosier des Indes” identify the specimen in Latin and French, anchoring the elegant arrangement within the conventions of botanical publication.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration of this period occupied fertile ground between art and natural history. A successful plate needed to convey the distinguishing features of a plant clearly, yet illustrated flower books were also prized for their visual sophistication. Redouté’s particular distinction lies in the ease with which he reconciled these demands. Here, descriptive details—the veining of a leaf, the joint of a stem, the changing form of a bud—are incorporated into a composition that feels graceful rather than clinical.
The pale, unoccupied background is essential to that effect. With no garden setting or decorative border to compete for attention, every contour remains visible and the branching silhouette can be read almost at a glance. Yet close inspection continually reveals finer distinctions of tone and texture. Rosa Indica therefore rewards both immediate appreciation and sustained observation, embodying the precise, cultivated flower painting for which Redouté remains so widely admired.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
