WeiterlesenLux, Vin Tonique Apéritif, created by an anonymous designer around 1900–1905, makes the bottle itself the commanding presence. Set upright at the centre of a portrait-format composition, its deep brown glass is silhouetted against a radiant golden sunburst, while green accents and decorative borders lend the advertisement a polished, ornamental finish. Above, the name ‘Lux’ unfurls in emphatic red script; below, the more functional wording ‘Vin Tonique Apéritif’ states the product with crisp directness.
The poster belongs to the flourishing commercial culture of the Belle Époque, when illustrated advertising became an increasingly conspicuous feature of urban life. Posters needed to be understood at a glance, but they also offered manufacturers a means of constructing a distinctive identity. Here, the drink is presented not merely as a commodity but as something fashionable and refined. The Latin-derived brand name—meaning ‘light’—is given a particularly apt visual treatment: rays appear to issue from behind the bottle, turning the product into the luminous centre of the design.
A closer look
The composition is built upon a strong central axis. The bottle rises from the lower half of the poster, its narrow neck directing the eye towards the sweeping brand name overhead. Highlights along the glass, together with delicate shadows around the neck and cap, give the container a degree of volume. This modelling is set against the deliberate flatness of the background, where repeated yellow rays spread outwards in a simple, energetic rhythm.
Typography does much of the persuasive work. ‘Lux’ is broad, red and decorative, with flourishes and faint outlines that amplify its presence against the pale ground. The lettering feels almost emblematic, designed to remain memorable even when seen quickly. By contrast, ‘Vin Tonique Apéritif’ is arranged for clarity, anchoring the exuberant brand name with a straightforward description of the beverage. This contrast between expressive display lettering and practical information is characteristic of effective period advertising.
Closer inspection reveals how carefully the smaller details support the overall impression. The label introduces intricate linear ornament and floral motifs, while green passages temper the warmth of the brown bottle and golden field. Along the outer edges, a dark, wood-like border frames the central radiance and gives the design a sense of enclosure. These details do not compete with the bottle; instead, they create successive layers of attention around it, from the bold headline to the patterned label and repeated border motifs.
Context and significance
At the turn of the twentieth century, advertising posters occupied a productive space between commerce and decorative art. Bold colour, simplified forms and inventive lettering allowed an anonymous designer to communicate with the speed required by public display while still producing an image rich in visual incident. Beverage advertising was especially suited to this approach: packaging, brand name and atmosphere could be fused into a single persuasive composition.
Lux, Vin Tonique Apéritif is a particularly concentrated example of that strategy. Nearly every element—the axial arrangement, the radiating light, the glossy bottle and the ornamental script—serves to make one name unmistakable. Its appeal now lies equally in the assured graphic structure and in the glimpse it provides of an era when modern brand identity was being fashioned through colour, typography and spectacle.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
