WeiterlesenPublished in 1984 using survey data sourced from 1968, the “Dodge City Quadrangle” presents one of Kansas’s most storied landscapes through the disciplined precision of the U.S. Geological Survey. At 1:24,000 scale, it captures Dodge City and its surrounding High Plains setting in exacting topographical detail, transforming a place of frontier legend into a measured, scientific portrait. The map’s title alone evokes the mythology of the American West: cattle drives, railheads, lawmen, saloons, and the long transition from open range to settled agricultural country. Yet this is not a romanticized view; it is a cartographic record of roads, contours, watercourses, town edges, and rural land patterns at a particular moment in late twentieth-century Kansas history.
Dodge City occupies the heart of the quadrangle, its urban fabric distinguished by color and symbol from the open agricultural lands around it. Once one of the most famous cattle towns on the Santa Fe Trail and later the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, Dodge City became synonymous with cowboy culture and frontier law. By the period reflected here, however, the city had evolved into a regional center shaped by highways, rail corridors, industry, agriculture, and expanding residential districts. The map offers a fascinating contrast between historical reputation and modern infrastructure: the legendary “Queen of the Cowtowns” appears not as myth, but as streets, routes, utilities, and carefully bounded development on the Kansas plains.
The cartography reflects the USGS tradition of clarity, accuracy, and restrained beauty. Contour lines trace the subtle rise and fall of a landscape that, to the eye, may appear almost level, but which reveals its quiet complexity under topographic scrutiny. Shaded relief and selective color give depth to the High Plains surface, differentiating urban areas, natural drainage, roads, trails, and cultivated land. Solid and dotted linework records the hierarchy of movement across the terrain, from established roads to lesser tracks. The result is both utilitarian and visually compelling: a map that rewards close reading, where modest elevation changes, land divisions, and settlement patterns become part of a larger geographical narrative.
The Arkansas River is among the most important natural features shown, threading the map with the historical and environmental significance that has long defined this region. In western Kansas, the river has served as a corridor for travel, trade, settlement, and irrigation, even as its flow has varied dramatically across seasons and decades. Its presence anchors Dodge City within a wider plains geography, linking the community to routes followed by Indigenous peoples, traders, soldiers, emigrants, ranchers, and railroad builders. Around it, rural lands and named places such as Richland and Royal situate the city within a working agricultural landscape, where fields, roads, and drainage patterns speak to the practical realities of life on the plains.
As a historical document, the map captures Dodge City at an especially interesting interval between the postwar decades and the accelerated urban changes of the late twentieth century. The 1968 source data preserves land use, transportation alignments, and settlement patterns from a period when American towns were expanding outward but still closely tied to agricultural hinterlands. Published in 1984, the quadrangle also reflects the USGS’s long-running effort to standardize and update the nation’s topographic knowledge. For collectors, historians, and admirers of the American West, this map offers more than coordinates and contours: it is a finely rendered snapshot of a famous frontier city after legend had given way to infrastructure, yet before modern growth further altered the surrounding plains.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Published in 1984 using survey data sourced from 1968, the “Dodge City Quadrangle” presents one of Kansas’s most storied landscapes through the disciplined precision of the U.S. Geological Survey.
