oranje-bitter-as-vintage-bitters-poster-1926
Oranje Bitter As Vintage Bitters Poster, 1926

Oranje Bitter As, created in 1926 by Lith. J.A. Luii & Co., turns a beverage advertisement into a densely decorative spectacle. At its centre, a dark-haired woman in a vivid red-and-green garment presents a bottle labelled ‘ORANGE AS’, while oranges, curling vines and luxuriant foliage crowd the surrounding field. The saturated palette and emphatic lettering give the poster an immediate commercial force, but its intricate borders and patterned costume reward a more lingering look.

Produced during the interwar period, the poster belongs to an era in which lithographed advertising helped define the appearance of modern streets, cafés and shops. Such designs had to communicate quickly: product, name and visual identity were compressed into a single memorable composition. Here, the orange is both ingredient and graphic motif, repeated across the design until the advertised flavour becomes inseparable from the poster’s colour and ornament. The lower inscription names Alph. Simkens and an address on the Turnhoutsche Baan in Borgerhout, locating this exuberant commercial image within a specific Dutch-speaking urban market.

A closer look

The figure occupies the central foreground, her brightly lit face, hands and bottle standing out against the darker vegetation. Her clothing is not rendered as a simple block of red: close inspection reveals smaller passages of gold and green pattern, which connect her visually to the ornate framework around her. The bottle is held upright and prominently displayed, its pale label forming a compact focal point amid the richer colours of costume and landscape.

Across the upper section, the words ‘ECHTE DUBBELE ORANJE BITTER AS’ crown the composition in bold yellow and white. The phrase identifies the drink as a ‘genuine double orange bitter’, with scale and contrast doing much of the persuasive work. Rather than sitting apart from the illustration, the typography presses into the leafy setting below, creating a layered hierarchy: brand message first, figure and bottle second, decorative detail thereafter.

Along the left and right edges, fruit and vines form vertical accents within a narrow black boundary. The oranges are picked out with small highlights that lend them an almost polished roundness, while varied greens give the foliage a dense, overlapping texture. Behind the woman, a thick tree trunk introduces a suggestion of depth, yet the design remains deliberately flat and graphic. Mosaic-like border patterns further compress landscape, ornament and advertisement into one continuous decorative surface. At the foot of the poster, the lettering ‘ALPH. SIMKENS. TURNHOUTSCHE BAAN BORGERHOUT’ provides a quieter counterweight to the commanding slogan above.

Context and significance

Oranje Bitter As demonstrates how effectively early twentieth-century advertising could combine direct salesmanship with elaborate illustration. Its strongest visual devices are simple and instantly legible—the upright bottle, repeated fruit and conspicuous product name—but they are embedded in a remarkably abundant setting. The contrast between vermilion red, citrus orange and deep leafy green makes the drink appear as the organising principle of an entire imagined grove.

The result is characteristic of poster design at its most purposeful: every element supports recognition, yet the image offers considerably more than a label enlarged to street scale. Figure, typography, fruit and patterned borders create a self-contained visual world, preserving the colour and confidence of interwar beverage advertising while retaining the local specificity of its Borgerhout address.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
