stollwerck-vintage-chocolate-poster-by-hans-unger-1898
Stollwerck Vintage Chocolate Poster by Hans Unger, 1898

Hans Unger’s Chocolat Stollwerck, created in 1898, places an elegantly dressed woman at the centre of a richly ornamental advertisement for the German chocolate company. Slightly offset within the tall composition, she holds a branded dish towards the viewer, her deep blue garment crossed by a vivid red belt. Warm brown and gold patterning fills the surrounding space, while the emphatic lettering below gives the design its commercial anchor. The result moves deftly between portraiture, decorative art and direct product promotion.

Unger was a German artist working at a moment when the illustrated poster was becoming an increasingly conspicuous feature of modern urban life. Improvements in colour reproduction and the growth of consumer brands encouraged artists to devise advertisements that could command attention from a distance while rewarding a closer look. Here, Stollwerck chocolate is presented not through a crowded display of goods, but through a carefully staged figure whose fashionable elegance lends the product a cultivated identity. Such designs helped establish advertising as a field in which fine-art draughtsmanship and graphic clarity could meet.

A closer look

The woman’s face forms the quietest area of the poster. Her dark hair is articulated with small curls and glints of light, while softly modelled skin and a contemplative expression introduce a degree of naturalism. Around her, the handling becomes more graphic. Spirals, linear flourishes and repeated motifs animate the blue fabric, their cool colour set sharply against the narrow red belt. The folds darken towards the lower part of the figure, giving her form weight without interrupting the poster’s broad decorative rhythm.

The dish is both an object within the scene and a compact advertisement in its own right. Its ornate outline echoes the curves of the clothing, but the clearly visible Stollwerck name makes its function unmistakable. This small branded detail is reinforced at the lower edge, where “Chocolat” and “Stollwerck” appear in bold, stylised lettering. Unger therefore builds a hierarchy of attention: first the figure, then the offered chocolate, and finally the company name.

Behind the woman, the golden field is structured by geometric ornament and subtle variations of tone. Rather than describing an identifiable interior, it acts as a decorative screen, flattening the space and throwing the figure forward. The richest colour interaction occurs along her right-hand side, where blue fabric, warm gold and red accents overlap in close succession. This contrast between smoothly shaded flesh and comparatively flat areas of pattern is central to the poster’s appeal: the figure seems present and tangible, yet remains integrated into an assertive graphic design.

Context and significance

By the late nineteenth century, commercial posters had become a prominent arena for artistic experimentation. Their effectiveness depended upon an immediate silhouette, memorable colour relationships and lettering that belonged to the composition rather than appearing as an afterthought. Chocolat Stollwerck meets those demands while retaining the elaborate surface associated with fin-de-siècle decorative culture. The woman does not merely accompany the typography; her pose, clothing and gesture direct attention towards the advertised name.

What makes Unger’s design especially engaging is its balance of intimacy and public display. The lowered gaze and delicately handled face suggest a private moment, yet the strong chromatic contrasts and repeated branding are calibrated for visibility. Seen today, the poster offers a concise lesson in how late nineteenth-century artists transformed an everyday commodity into a sophisticated visual proposition—one carried as much by pattern, gesture and colour as by words.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
