amer-belge-schmidt-vintage-drinks-advertising-poster-by-j-e-goossens-1905
Amer Belge Schmidt Vintage Drinks Advertising Poster by J. E. Goossens, 1905

J. E. Goossens’s Amer Belge Schmidt, dated 1905, turns a convivial exchange between two formally dressed gentlemen into an emphatic piece of beverage advertising. One man stands at the left, raising his glass and extending an arm towards his companion; the other sits comfortably in the foreground, smiling broadly with a drink in hand. Their warm brown and grey clothing is thrown into relief by a deep blue ground, while the product name appears overhead in forceful red lettering.

The poster belongs to an early twentieth-century advertising culture in which illustration, typography and character were closely integrated. Rather than presenting the beverage in isolation, Goossens builds an anecdotal scene around it: sociability and good humour become part of the sales message. The exaggerated expressions and expansive gestures are immediately legible, while the limited palette and bold hierarchy would have helped the design command attention at a distance. Goossens, a Belgian artist associated with the period 1874–1950, brings decorative lettering and crisp organisation to an otherwise loose, theatrical encounter.

A closer look

The composition moves diagonally from the standing figure in the upper left to the seated gentleman at lower right. The former’s outstretched arm acts almost like a pointer, directing attention across the conversation and towards the second glass. Although the two men overlap, their contrasting poses keep their silhouettes distinct: one is upright and animated, the other rounded, settled and visibly pleased. Soft shadows beneath the seated figure give him a sense of weight without disturbing the poster’s broad, graphic simplicity.

Small details sharpen the humour and social character of the scene. Fine linear marks articulate the standing man’s coat, contrasting with the flatter blue surrounding him. Highlights along the rims and bowls of the glasses make them glint, while the seated man’s carefully drawn eyes and open smile convey infectious enthusiasm. A circular ornament on his lapel adds another concentrated note of pattern, echoed by the decorative floral motifs along the lower-left border.

At the top, the red words “Amer Belge Schmidt” form the strongest block of colour. Beneath them, the French slogan “Avouons que C’est toujours le Meilleur” — broadly, “Let us admit that it is always the best” — reinforces the scene’s knowing, persuasive tone. The lettering does not merely label the subject: it completes the joke, as though the two drinkers have already reached the conclusion announced by the advertisement. A bottle at the lower right anchors that exchange to the advertised product while remaining secondary to the larger human comedy.

Context and significance

Advertising posters of this period often relied on sharply characterised figures and easily grasped situations rather than extensive information. Here, the spare blue background suppresses almost every distraction, allowing gesture, facial expression and typography to carry the message. The approach reflects the poster’s public function: strong colour contrasts establish the brand first, then the humorous details reward a closer view.

Amer Belge Schmidt is particularly engaging for the way it balances commercial directness with caricatural observation. Its two protagonists do more than display their drinks; through posture, glance and gesture, they stage a miniature conversation. The result is a lively example of vintage beverage graphics in which pleasure is communicated less by the bottle itself than by the exuberant company gathered around it.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
