vieux-d-anvers-vintage-genever-poster-1923
Vieux d’Anvers Vintage Genever Poster, 1923

Proeft de Zeer Oude Genever Vieux d’Anvers, produced by Litho Myncke in 1923, turns an advertisement for Belgian genever into a bustling outdoor tableau. Two men occupy the foreground: one sits comfortably at a table, glass raised to his lips, while his companion leans into the conversation. Behind them, a tiled-roof building, leafy trees and a gathering of distant figures establish an atmosphere of sociability. Strong red lettering crowns the scene, set against green foliage, warm earthen browns and an open blue sky.

The poster belongs to an era when commercial lithography had to communicate quickly amid the visual competition of the modern street. Its message is direct—“Proeft”, or “taste”, begins the headline—but the design sells more than a bottle. Genever, the juniper-flavoured spirit associated with Belgium and the Netherlands, is presented as part of convivial public life and regional identity. The mingling of Dutch in “Proeft de Zeer Oude Genever” with the French name “Vieux d’Anvers” also reflects the multilingual character of Belgian commerce. Rather than isolating the product against a blank ground, Litho Myncke embeds it within a persuasive scene of leisure, companionship and local belonging.

A closer look

The eye is first caught by the seated drinker in his brown suit. His bent arm brings the small glass towards his face, while the pale shirt of the standing man creates a crisp contrast nearby. Their gestures form a compact exchange around the table, yet the bottle at the lower right remains carefully visible. Its decorative label is rendered with enough intricacy to distinguish it as the object around which the entire composition turns.

Beyond this foreground encounter, the poster expands into a more populous setting. Numerous figures, many wearing period hats, gather in the middle distance; their reduced scale and overlapping forms lead towards the horizon. At the left, the red tiles and earthy façade of a traditional building anchor the composition. Above, foliage opens onto a softly clouded blue sky, while a Belgian flag—its black, yellow and red stripes clearly differentiated—flies from the building at the upper right. This small national accent quietly reinforces the spirit’s geographical identity.

Typography provides the poster’s principal graphic structure. The large red headline dominates the upper portion, its emphatic colour standing out against the cooler greens and blues of the scene. At the bottom, the wording “LIKEURSTOKERIJ DE POLDERNAAR FELIX VAN RILLAER KLOOSTERSTRAAT 135” supplies the distillery and address, followed by the firmly placed “ANTWERPEN”. The result is a clear hierarchy: invitation above, pleasurable demonstration in the centre, and commercial information below.

Context and significance

Early twentieth-century beverage posters often transformed consumption into narrative, surrounding the advertised drink with recognisable settings and desirable social rituals. Here, the appeal depends upon familiarity rather than glamour. The simple table, rustic architecture and crowded gathering make genever appear established and communal, while the phrase “Zeer Oude”—“very old”—emphasises age and tradition as marks of quality.

The design is equally revealing as a work of Belgian graphic culture. Flat passages of vivid colour and clearly outlined figures provide immediate legibility, but closer inspection uncovers a wealth of incident: facial expressions, varied clothing, the patterned bottle label and the tiny procession of figures in the distance. Practical advertising and detailed storytelling meet in a poster whose lively surface preserves something of Antwerp’s multilingual, sociable commercial world in 1923.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
