biere-de-l-aigle-vintage-beer-poster-for-chopard-freres-1904
Bière de l’Aigle Vintage Beer Poster for Chopard Frères, 1904

Bière de l’Aigle. Chopard frères, produced by Imp. Chaix in 1904, gives a beer advertisement the improbable exhilaration of flight. A smiling, fair-haired woman raises a foaming glass while riding upon the back of a vast eagle, whose outstretched wings turn the central motif into a sweeping dark silhouette. Her white blouse and vivid red skirt flare against a softly modulated blue ground, while the emphatic lettering above makes the advertised name—“Bière de l’Aigle”—impossible to miss.

Created at a time when commercial posters had become a conspicuous feature of European urban life, the design belongs to a sophisticated culture of large-scale visual advertising. Printers such as Imp. Chaix helped businesses establish instantly recognisable identities through forceful typography, memorable figures and concentrated colour. Here, the eagle is more than a repeated emblem: it supplies the entire composition with movement, lifting an everyday drink into the realm of spectacle. The Chopard frères name, placed below, anchors this buoyant fantasy in a specific commercial brand.

A closer look

The woman occupies the brightest area of the poster. Light catches her face, the folds of her blouse and the raised glass, making these details stand out against the eagle’s dense plumage. Her pose is celebratory without being static: long hair streams behind her, the skirt opens in layered scarlet and orange-red frills, and the lifted arm extends the upward thrust of the composition. Small highlights on the glass give the beer a tangible presence amid the otherwise theatrical scene.

Beneath her, the eagle spreads across much of the vertical format. Its wings form a broad, curving support, their feathering rendered with enough tonal variation to retain an impression of texture while still reading as a strong graphic mass. The bird’s sharply observed eye adds a note of intensity that contrasts with the rider’s cheerful expression. Overlapping bodies create a slight sense of depth, but the poster remains deliberately direct: figure, emblem and product are fused into one legible sign.

The typography completes the visual hierarchy. “Bière de l’Aigle” dominates the upper section in large decorative characters, positioned to be read before the eye descends to the airborne pair. “Chopard frères” appears lower down in a smaller but distinct treatment. Warm reds and oranges pull the central figure forward, while the cooler blue background leaves generous breathing room around the eagle’s wings. This simple opposition of warm and cool colour gives the poster much of its immediate force.

Context and significance

By 1904, poster design had become central to the presentation of food, drink, entertainment and travel. A successful advertisement needed to work at a glance, often amid crowded streets and competing notices. Bière de l’Aigle answers that demand through exaggeration rather than explanation: there is no brewing scene or detailed account of the product, only a memorable name transformed into a vivid pictorial event.

The result is both promotional and fantastical. Its eagle motif, exuberant rider and boldly separated colours reveal how turn-of-the-century advertising could borrow the scale and drama of narrative illustration while maintaining the clarity of a trademark. Even at close range, the image retains that double character—rich in small details, yet built to communicate with striking speed.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper.
