schauwecker-reichart-cie-vintage-wine-poster-by-henry-bischoff-1919
Schauwecker Reichart & Cie. Vintage Wine Poster by Henry Bischoff, 1919

Henry Bischoff’s Weine – Schauwecker Reichart & Cie. A.G., created in 1919, turns a wine merchant’s advertisement into a tightly staged scene of sociability. Two men occupy the foreground, seated around a small table where a bottle and glass establish the subject without need of elaborate explanation. Behind them, further drinkers gather in a dark, crowded interior. Deep brown and black are warmed by russet, orange and red, while sharply placed areas of white bring faces, clothing and lettering forward from the surrounding gloom.

Bischoff was a Swiss designer, and this poster belongs to a period in which illustrated advertising had become an increasingly powerful means of establishing commercial identity. Produced immediately after the First World War, it does more than name Schauwecker Reichart & Cie. A.G.: it associates the company’s wines with conviviality, cultivated leisure and urban social life. Rather than presenting an isolated bottle, Bischoff builds a miniature world around the product. The approach is characteristic of effective early twentieth-century poster design, combining an instantly legible message with stylised imagery strong enough to register at a distance.

A closer look

The composition is vertically organised but deliberately busy. At bottom centre, the seated pair forms its visual anchor. One man raises a glass, its small highlight catching against the darker tones; the other attends to the bottle on the table. Their bodies are defined with broad, graphic contours and areas of compressed tonal shading rather than meticulous naturalism. This simplification gives the figures weight and clarity while preserving the intimate feeling of a conversation observed across a crowded room.

The setting expands upwards through overlapping people and furnishings. A partially visible man in a top hat enters from the left edge, an economical detail that makes the gathering seem to continue beyond the poster’s frame. Standing figures occupy the middle and upper reaches, including another drinker holding a glass. On the right, a decorative pot rests upon the bar counter, providing a rounded ornamental counterpoint to the angular silhouettes and block lettering. Suggested drapery in the background introduces further pattern, although it remains subordinate to the human activity.

Bischoff uses darkness not merely as atmosphere but as a structural device. Black and deep brown bind the interior together, allowing pale faces, shirt fronts and reflective glassware to emerge in abrupt accents. Fine linear marks across the clothing evoke tailored fabrics, while the stronger outlines keep each figure distinct within the densely layered room. A solid dark border contains the activity, reinforcing the impression of a compact theatrical scene.

Context and significance

The lower section delivers the commercial message in emphatic, block-like type: “WEINE SCHAUWECKER REICHART & CIE. A.G.” Beneath it, the place names “Schaffhausen, Zürich” connect the company to two Swiss cities. The typographic panel is not treated as an afterthought. Its pale lettering answers the lighter accents above, creating a clear graphic hierarchy in which atmosphere first attracts attention and the company name then resolves the poster’s purpose.

What distinguishes Bischoff’s design is its emphasis on experience rather than inventory. Wine appears within gestures, conversation and the compressed rhythms of a public interior: a raised glass, a handled bottle, figures standing behind seated companions. The result is both advertisement and social vignette, preserving something of the visual confidence with which commercial posters addressed modern city audiences in 1919.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
