Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Les liliacees Pl.29 (1805–1816), devoted to Amaryllis humilis, builds an entire composition from the plant’s upward growth. A rounded bulb anchors the lower edge, sending out narrow green leaves and two slender stems crowned by pink, many-petalled flowers. Set against an almost empty pale ground, the specimen appears at once firmly observed and remarkably light: the blossoms seem to hover above the darker, earthier form of the bulb.
Dating from 1805, the plate belongs to Redouté’s influential Les Liliacées, a large early nineteenth-century French project devoted to lilies and related plants. Redouté was among the period’s most admired botanical artists, celebrated for reconciling the practical demands of plant study with an exceptionally graceful pictorial manner. His work emerged at a time when classification, collecting and horticultural knowledge were becoming closely entwined with refined book production. Made for scholars, collectors and patrons of natural history, plates such as this one allowed scientific observation and decorative beauty to occupy the same page.
A closer look
The composition rises in clearly articulated stages. At the base, the bulb is rendered with irregular tonal markings that suggest its dry, textured outer surface. Long, linear leaves overlap around it, some bending gently away from the central axis while others follow the stems upwards. Their cool greens provide a restrained counterpoint to the warmer flowers above, while the intervals of untouched background prevent the clustered foliage from becoming visually dense.
Higher up, the two stems create a poised, near-symmetrical structure without becoming rigidly matched. Each supports a group of open and partially turned blossoms, allowing the plant to be understood from several angles. The petals shift from deeper rose and red-pink near their bases to paler colour towards their tips. Fine veins follow their length, giving each flower a softly pleated appearance. Within the open blooms, the small stamens and pistils are carefully distinguished, details that reward close viewing while preserving the overall clarity of the arrangement.
Redouté’s line is particularly effective where different botanical structures meet. The firm contours of the leaves contrast with the thinner, more delicate edges of the petals; the compact bulb, meanwhile, carries greater visual weight than either. This movement from dense form below to airy colour above gives the plate its quiet rhythm. Along the lower edge, the name Amaryllis humilis identifies the specimen, while “P. J. Redouté pinx.” records Redouté’s authorship without disturbing the generous surrounding space.
Context and significance
Les Liliacées exemplifies the flowering of botanical illustration in early nineteenth-century France, when images of plants served not only as records but also as carefully composed works of visual culture. Redouté’s achievement lay in preserving the information needed to examine a specimen—its bulb, foliage, stems, flowers and reproductive structures—while avoiding the dryness of a diagram. Here, the isolated plant remains legible from root-like base to blossom, yet its balanced silhouette and modulated pinks give it the presence of a formal portrait.
The lasting appeal of Plate 29 lies in that productive tension between classification and elegance. Nothing extraneous competes with the plant, but the result is far from austere: small variations in contour, veining and colour make Amaryllis humilis feel vivid and individual. It is a particularly articulate example of Redouté’s ability to turn exact botanical attention into an image of composure and luminosity.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
