Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Les liliacees Pl.62 (1805-1816), dated 1805, presents Aphyllanthes monspeliensis as an exceptionally spare arrangement of fine green stems, grass-like foliage and three blue flowers. The plant rises almost weightlessly through the centre of the pale ground, its narrow, slightly diverging lines culminating in star-shaped blooms. Redouté leaves ample space around the specimen, allowing the smallest changes of direction—from an arching leaf to the gentle tilt of a flower head—to become part of the composition.
The plate belongs to Les liliacées, Redouté’s celebrated early nineteenth-century series devoted to plants then associated with the lily family. Botanical illustration at this period answered both scientific and aesthetic interests: plants were recorded for study and classification, yet also presented as subjects of considerable refinement. Redouté, often described as the “Raphael of flowers”, became renowned for precisely this union of observation and grace. Rather than treating the specimen as a diagram alone, he organised roots, stems, leaves and flowers into a lucid visual structure without sacrificing their distinctive botanical character.
A closer look
The eye begins at the lower edge, where a compact tuft of finely described roots anchors the otherwise airy plant. From this earthy brown base, numerous narrow green blades spread and curve, some remaining close to the centre while others sweep outwards before returning the gaze towards the upright stems. Their overlapping contours create a subtle sense of depth, despite the restraint of the setting.
Higher up, the stems become increasingly slender and isolated against the warm, pale beige background. The three flowers are distributed asymmetrically, preventing the study from feeling rigid: one bloom faces more directly forward, while the others turn at slightly different angles. Each is built from delicately veined blue petals, with gradations from cool, relatively saturated edges to paler interior tones. Small yellow accents at the centres provide a warm counterpoint to the blue, while restrained shading gives the stems and petals a quiet dimensionality.
A separate botanical detail appears at the bottom left, where the flower’s constituent parts are examined apart from the principal specimen. This small addition changes the register of the plate: the central plant may be admired as an elegant whole, but the subsidiary study encourages closer scrutiny of its anatomy. Along the lower edge, the inscription “Aphyllanthes Monspeliensis / Aphyllanthes de Montpellier” identifies the subject in a decorative script whose flowing forms echo the plant’s own narrow leaves.
Context and significance
Redouté helped establish a visual language for botanical art in which accuracy and ornament were not competing aims. In this plate, scientific clarity depends upon aesthetic discipline: the uncluttered ground separates each structure, the careful tonal changes explain volume, and the vertical format accommodates the plant’s natural habit. At the same time, the measured asymmetry and rhythmic spacing lend the specimen the poise of a formal portrait.
What makes Plate 62 particularly engaging is the contrast between its modest subject and its attentive treatment. There is no dense bouquet or theatrical profusion of petals; its interest lies instead in slenderness, interval and minute variation. The roots, anatomical study and botanical inscription establish the plate’s educational purpose, while the ascending stems and clear blue flowers give it an enduring compositional elegance.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
