Continuer la lectureHenry Jerome Schile’s Have one with me (1893) turns an invitation to drink into a lively theatrical encounter. A smiling woman in a brilliant red bodice and yellow-striped skirt raises a glass towards the viewer, while an imposing blue-and-white beer stein and an attentive goat complete the scene. Warm colour, animated gesture and a closely cropped, portrait-format composition give the poster its immediate persuasive force: the advertised beverage is embedded in a sociable tableau rather than presented as an isolated product.
Schile was an American artist active in the nineteenth century, known for imagery shaped by everyday social subjects and the accessible visual language of advertising and popular print culture. Here, the title operates almost as spoken dialogue. “Have one with me” addresses the passer-by directly, making hospitality itself part of the sales appeal. This blend of illustration, ornament and informal invitation belongs to a period in which increasingly visible commercial imagery had to communicate quickly, using recognisable characters, emphatic lettering and memorable visual jokes.
A closer look
The woman dominates the central foreground, her pose held somewhere between a toast and a stage gesture. Black gloves sharpen the outline of her arms against the paler background, while the saturated red of her bodice is set against yellow fabric striped with darker accents. Fine lines articulate the folds and momentary movement of the skirt, and a narrow lace trim introduces a delicate counterpoint to the bold blocks of colour. Her open expression reinforces the wording of the title: she does not merely display the drink but appears to offer company.
Beside her, the rounded beer stein provides a second visual centre. Its cool blue decoration and white ceramic body stand apart from the surrounding reds, golds and browns, with ornamental motifs giving it the appearance of a substantial, desirable object. Below, the large word “Bock” spreads across the lower edge in stylised red-and-blue lettering. The typography functions as a firm graphic base, balancing the figure above and ensuring that the beverage remains unmistakable even within the bustle of the illustration.
The goat in the lower-right corner is more than incidental comic detail. Its lifted head echoes the viewer’s upward gaze towards the woman and the drink, while its textured coat contrasts with the smoother treatment of clothing and ceramic. The animal also supplies a visual pun: Bock is the German word for a male goat as well as the name of a beer style, and goats became a familiar motif in bock-beer imagery. Subtle foliage at the upper left, a low stone wall and a softly blended pastel distance suggest an outdoor setting without distracting from the principal exchange.
Context and significance
Have one with me demonstrates how late nineteenth-century beverage advertising could borrow the pleasures of popular illustration. Rather than relying on dense information, the design builds its message from personality, costume and conviviality. The woman’s direct appeal, the emphatic brand lettering and the goat’s humorous association with bock work at different speeds: first attracting attention, then naming the drink, and finally rewarding closer inspection.
A small inscription at the bottom right reads “H. Schile & Sons 295 Bowery N.Y.”, locating the design within the commercial world of New York print culture. Yet the poster’s attraction lies equally in its carefully controlled excess: striped fabric, lace, decorated ceramic, expressive gesture and ornamental type are compressed into a compact composition. Schile makes the act of advertising feel like a shared joke and an offered toast—bright, personable and unmistakably designed to be noticed.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x20in (90x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
