Continuer la lecturePublished in 2000 using data from 1999, the U.S. Geological Survey’s “Tallahassee Quadrangle” presents Florida’s capital and its surrounding landscape at the intimate 1:24,000 scale long favored for precise topographic study. The map captures Tallahassee at a moment when late twentieth-century urban growth was pressing outward into pine woods, wetlands, lakes, and rolling uplands. Its original title is spare and authoritative, reflecting the USGS quadrangle tradition: a systematic, scientifically grounded portrait of place. Here, the city is not isolated as a political center, but shown as part of a larger environmental fabric—roads, neighborhoods, university grounds, airport facilities, drainage systems, and natural corridors all set within the subtly varied terrain of north Florida.
The U.S. Geological Survey has been one of the defining cartographic institutions in American public life, producing maps that shape how land is measured, managed, developed, protected, and understood. Founded in the nineteenth century to classify public lands and natural resources, the USGS became essential to forestry, water management, engineering, environmental protection, and land-use planning. This Tallahassee sheet reflects that mission in modern form: it is both a navigational document and a civic instrument. Its symbols and contours translate the region into an analytical landscape, revealing not only where roads and settlements lie, but how elevation, hydrology, vegetation, and infrastructure interact. For planners, ecologists, surveyors, and historians, such a map becomes a record of decisions made upon the land.
Tallahassee’s topography gives this quadrangle particular richness. Unlike the flatter coastal plains often associated with Florida, the capital sits amid the Red Hills region, where gentle but perceptible elevation changes shape drainage, road alignments, and patterns of development. The map’s contour lines articulate this terrain with quiet precision, tracing rises, depressions, and watersheds that underlie the urban fabric. Around the city appear lakes, wooded tracts, and low-lying wet areas characteristic of the central north Florida ecosystem. Lake Munson and Lake Lafayette, together with the broader drainage patterns feeding toward the St. Marks River system, evoke a landscape where water is both scenic and structurally important. These features reveal Tallahassee as a city built into, rather than simply upon, a living terrain.
The map’s urban details are equally absorbing. The Florida State University appears as a major civic and educational landmark, while Tallahassee International Airport anchors the southwestern side of the metropolitan area and connects the capital to wider regional networks. Roads such as Capital Circle NE and U.S. Highway 27 show the framework of twentieth-century mobility, linking neighborhoods, commercial corridors, and suburban subdivisions including areas such as Killearn Estates. Smaller communities and place names—Chaires, Miccosukee, Smith Creek, and Crawfordville in the broader regional context—suggest the older settlement geography surrounding the capital. Parks, recreational lands, paths, and transportation routes are carefully differentiated, offering a layered view of how administrative, residential, educational, and leisure landscapes coexisted at the turn of the millennium.
As a historical document, the “Tallahassee Quadrangle” is especially valuable for tracing the evolving relationship between human expansion and natural systems. The 1999 data preserves a snapshot of development before subsequent decades of growth altered subdivisions, roads, conservation priorities, and environmental pressures. The proximity of urban Tallahassee to larger natural regions, including the Apalachicola National Forest to the southwest and the riverine landscapes associated with the St. Marks and Sopchoppy watersheds, underscores the ecological stakes of planning in this part of Florida. Dense vegetation, lakes, wetlands, and low relief are not background decoration; they are central actors in the map’s story. In its disciplined USGS style, this quadrangle elegantly records a capital city negotiating its place within a complex and enduring natural landscape.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
