Continuer la lecturePublished in 1901, Alphonse Mucha’s Combinaisons Ornementales se Multipliant à l'Infini à L'Aide du Miroir gathers the vocabulary of Art Nouveau into a compact, intricately balanced design. A stylised female head occupies the centre, her flowing hair threaded with muted green contours and floral ornament. Around her, vines, blossoms, insects and a bird in flight form an animated field of warm orange, olive green and earthy brown. The composition is less a conventional scene than a treasury of motifs: each element can be read independently, yet curves and repeated shapes bind the whole together.
The design belongs to a collaborative ornamental folio associated with George Auriol, Maurice Pillard Verneuil and Mucha, who contributed eleven of its sixty colour-lithographed plates. Conceived for artists and decorators, the publication offered patterns derived from plants, birds, insects and other natural forms. Its especially ingenious premise is announced by the title: the designs were intended to be viewed through two joined mirrors, allowing fragments of ornament to proliferate into kaleidoscopic arrangements. A single flower, wing or curling stem could thus become the basis of a seemingly limitless pattern.
A closer look
The female figure provides a visual anchor without dominating the surrounding ornament. Her face is framed by sweeping locks that behave almost like foliage, blurring the distinction between portraiture and pattern. Floral forms cluster around her neck, while fine linear accents articulate the hair and connect it to neighbouring scrolls. This interweaving of figure and decoration is characteristic of Mucha’s visual language: the human profile becomes another supple, rhythmically curved component within the design.
In the upper right, a bird spreads its wings across the pale ground. Its body and feathers are simplified into bands, scallops and tapering contours, with orange and brown passages set against cooler green. Opposite it, a semicircular spray of small blossoms creates a measured arc in the upper left. These two areas establish a loose balance without rigid symmetry. Below, orange flowers and vine-like stems gather more densely on the left, while a spiral ornament curls inward at the lower right, repeating the circular movement found elsewhere in the plate.
Small details reward a slower reading. Insect forms appear near the bottom centre, absorbed into the decorative scheme rather than presented as natural-history specimens. Repeated leaves alter subtly in scale and direction, and slight tonal variations keep the flat areas of colour from becoming static. The warm motifs are given room to breathe by the pale ground and soft beige border. In the upper-right corner, the number ‘48’ appears within a circle, a restrained reminder that this elaborate arrangement formed part of a larger sequence of designs.
Context and significance
Art Nouveau artists sought a modern decorative language grounded in the structures of nature: unfurling stems, wings, petals, tendrils and the sinuous movement of hair. Mucha became one of the movement’s best-known figures, particularly through compositions in which women, flowers, lettering and ornamental borders are treated as parts of a unified graphic whole. Here, however, the emphasis falls not on narrative or advertising but on the adaptable mechanics of decoration.
The folio also reflects the close relationship between fine art, graphic design and the applied arts at the turn of the twentieth century. Rather than proposing one finished arrangement, it supplied a visual grammar that other makers could study, repeat and transform. The mirror device made that principle literal: ornament was not fixed, but capable of continual recombination. This plate remains compelling precisely because it preserves that double identity—an accomplished composition in its own right and a working repertoire of forms awaiting further multiplication.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
