Seguir leyendoArachnida Araneidea, Plate 23 (1879) by Frederick DuCane Godman is a classic Victorian zoological illustration that distills the era’s passion for taxonomy into a clear, elegant study of spiders. Published as part of a broader scientific project on arachnids, this plate presents carefully observed specimens with a measured, documentary touch—precisely the kind of image scholars of the day used to support identification and classification. Godman, a noted British naturalist and collector, worked at a time when beautifully printed plates were vital tools for expanding public and scholarly knowledge of the natural world.
This fine art print is produced to museum standards on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas, using richly pigmented inks for lasting color and detail. Available in a range of sizes, it can be ordered unframed or in a custom frame curated by The Unique Maps Co. Personalize yours with optional titling (e.g., “Arachnida Araneidea, Plate 23, 1879”), a subtle plate number, or a dedication on the margin. We also offer tasteful background options—from crisp white to a warm, antique ivory—to suit both contemporary and traditional interiors.
Frederick DuCane Godman (1834–1919) was a leading figure of late Victorian natural history, known for combining rigorous fieldwork and curation with an appreciation for fine printing. His collaborations and collections helped map the biodiversity of the 19th century for a curious public and an expanding scientific community. This plate reflects his commitment to accuracy and his belief that artful presentation could make complex information more legible and memorable.
What makes this particular work notable is its disciplined arrangement and numbered labeling—hallmarks of a plate designed for study. Each spider is presented with anatomical clarity to aid comparison across forms, a format that contributed to the growth of arachnology by standardizing how differences were recorded and understood. Rather than dramatizing nature, the image trusts precision to tell the story, giving it enduring educational and historical value.
A restrained palette heightens that sense of purpose. Against a pale, almost luminous ground, the spiders are rendered with fine linework and delicately washed color—muted blacks and browns punctuated by warm yellows and soft orange tones. The slender legs and segmented bodies are crisply delineated, while the watercolor shading adds volume and a lifelike sheen without overwhelming the page. The result is a poised balance of science and aesthetics: clean, orderly, and quietly beautiful—a timeless statement for a study, library, or gallery wall.
As a gift, this print suits natural history enthusiasts, biology students, museum-goers, and anyone who appreciates the marriage of knowledge and design. It’s a thoughtful choice for Christmas, birthdays, Father’s or Mother’s Day, a new home or office, or as a celebratory present for someone embarking on a research project or returning from travels inspired by the natural world.
If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.
You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.
You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.
This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
