Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Canina Burboniana, dated 1817, presents a flowering rose stem as an elegant, self-contained botanical study. A large pink bloom opens near the centre, its loosely layered petals turning from deeper rose at the folds to pale blush along their edges. Above it, smaller buds punctuate the curving stem, while serrated green leaves spread out below and to either side. Set against a spacious cream ground, the plant appears both scientifically legible and carefully composed.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, renowned particularly for his studies of roses and other cultivated flowers. His work belongs to a period in which botanical illustration served several purposes at once: recording the distinguishing structures of plants, circulating horticultural knowledge and satisfying a growing taste for refined natural-history publications. Here, close observation is inseparable from decorative judgement. The rose is isolated for examination, yet the measured ascent of stem, flower and bud gives the plate the poise of a formal portrait.
A closer look
The fully opened blossom forms the composition’s visual centre of gravity. Its petals are not treated as a flat pink mass: subtle tonal transitions describe their overlapping edges, shallow creases and inward curls. The outer petals spread broadly, while those around the centre gather into tighter, more intricate folds. This variation gives the flower volume without heavy shadow, preserving the clarity expected of a botanical plate.
The foliage provides a darker, more sharply articulated counterpoint. Individual leaflets have toothed margins and finely traced veins, with richer greens concentrated around overlaps and along the central ribs. Their alternating directions keep the specimen from appearing rigid. Some project laterally, others turn upwards with the stem, creating a branching rhythm around the bloom. Small, distinctly rendered thorns interrupt the slender stem—a precise detail that tempers the rose’s ornamental softness with an indication of its physical character.
Towards the upper right, the unopened buds introduce both scale and sequence. Their compact forms, touched with pink but enclosed by green sepals, suggest different stages of flowering alongside the mature central rose. The pale, largely unoccupied background is essential to the effect: it separates each contour, leaving room to inspect the stem and leaves while also lending the arrangement an unusual sense of calm. At the foot of the plate, the inscription identifies the subject as “Rosa Canina Burboniana” and gives the French name “Rosier de l’Île de Bourbon.”
Context and significance
Redouté’s botanical art emerged from a long European tradition in which illustration was a principal means of describing and comparing plants. By the early nineteenth century, such plates could unite exacting naturalism with exceptionally delicate colour. Redouté was especially accomplished at maintaining that balance: veins, thorns and petal structures remain clear, but the specimen never feels diagrammatic. Smooth gradations and disciplined outlines preserve the particular softness of the flower without sacrificing its botanical identity.
Rosa Canina Burboniana rewards attention because its apparent simplicity is so carefully organised. The sweep of the stem, the unequal clusters of foliage and the progression from bud to open bloom turn one isolated specimen into a quiet study of growth. It is characteristic of Redouté’s achievement that the rose can be read at once as a plant to be examined and as an image of remarkable compositional refinement.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
