Seguir leyendoJules Chéret’s Cacao Lhara turns a beverage advertisement into a burst of late nineteenth-century spectacle. A smiling woman, caught in a buoyant off-centre pose, raises a glass amid sweeping passages of yellow, red and blue. Above her, the product name arcs across the composition in large decorative lettering; below, the emphatic name of F. Mugnier anchors the design. Figure, colour and typography appear to move together, giving the poster the immediacy needed to command attention on a crowded street or in a shop window.
Created for a cocoa product associated with F. Mugnier, a distiller in Dijon, the commercial lithograph belongs to the flourishing advertising culture of the Belle Époque. Chéret is often described as the father of the modern poster because he helped establish it as a vivid urban art form rather than a notice dominated by text. Here, the claim to a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle lends the product the authority of international exhibition culture, while the animated figure supplies pleasure, sociability and modern metropolitan energy.
A closer look
The woman is the composition’s principal point of focus, yet she is positioned just away from the central axis, creating a lively imbalance. Her open smile and raised glass make the sales message instantly legible without reducing the design to a literal product display. Flowing contours run through her clothing, while subtle shadows describe the turn of the fabric and the movement of the figure. Floral details on the dress offer a more intricate counterpoint to the poster’s broad, flat areas of colour.
Warm yellow and red dominate, bringing the figure forward against quieter passages of blue, green and brown. Chéret uses tonal variation sparingly: highlights strike the woman’s skin, dress and glass, while the surrounding field remains comparatively simplified. The result retains the relative flatness essential to poster design but avoids visual stiffness. Swathes of colour seem to circulate around the figure, acting less like a conventional setting than an atmospheric stage for gesture and lettering.
The typography is organised as part of the action. “Cacao Lhara” occupies the upper register in bold ornamental forms, establishing the product before the eye descends to the figure. “F. Mugnier” appears strongly across the lower section, followed by “Distillateur à Dijon” and the medal claim in smaller lettering. This hierarchy allows the poster to be understood at different distances: first as a brilliant arrangement of figure and colour, then as a sequence of commercial information. Even the smaller decorative motifs around the upper area help bind the text to the illustration.
Context and significance
Chéret’s posters helped transform the streets of late nineteenth-century France into open-air galleries of colour. His designs frequently centred on exuberant female figures—sometimes known collectively as “Chérettes”—whose dancing poses and fashionable vivacity became closely associated with Parisian poster culture. In Cacao Lhara, that approach is adapted to the promotion of a beverage: the woman does not merely accompany the wording but gives the brand its character, embodying gaiety and ease.
The reference to the 1889 Exposition Universelle is equally revealing. Medals awarded at international exhibitions became potent advertising devices, suggesting that a commodity had received public recognition within a culture fascinated by industry, novelty and display. Chéret integrates that claim into a design that remains celebratory rather than bureaucratic. The enduring interest of Cacao Lhara lies in this balance: persuasive branding is present throughout, yet it is carried by inventive colour, rhythmic lettering and a figure whose energy still exceeds the practical demands of the advertisement.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the undefined version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
