Seguir leyendoPierre Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, plate 22, presents Cerasus domestica as a poised arrangement of ripe cherries, serrated leaves and slender stems. Published in 1827, the study is built around a vivid contrast: lustrous red fruit hangs in the lower centre while green foliage opens above and to either side. Against the pale, almost creamy ground, the branch appears both botanically exact and effortlessly ornamental.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, celebrated for uniting close observation with unusual delicacy of form and colour. Often called the “Raphael of flowers”, he worked during a period in which botanical illustration served several audiences at once: naturalists seeking accurate records, gardeners and collectors interested in cultivated varieties, and readers drawn to the visual refinement of lavish flower books. Choix des plus belles fleurs belongs to this culture of looking closely, presenting individual specimens with the clarity of scientific study and the compositional grace of still life.
A closer look
The cherries gather towards the lower half of the composition, suspended from fine curving stalks attached to a muted brown branch. Redouté differentiates each fruit through small shifts in tone rather than heavy outlines. Deep crimson gathers around their shaded edges, while restrained highlights give the skins a smooth, reflective sheen. The fruits overlap without becoming crowded, their rounded forms set off by the open space surrounding them.
Above, the leaves create a looser, more angular rhythm. Their pointed tips and finely serrated margins contrast with the cherries’ near-perfect circles, while delicately traced veins describe the internal structure of each leaf. The greens range from fresh yellow-green to deeper olive and forest tones, allowing individual leaves to fold, tilt and overlap convincingly. Some turn towards the light; others recede beneath neighbouring foliage, producing depth without disturbing the plate’s essential clarity.
The asymmetry is carefully judged. The branch rises through the page rather than occupying its centre rigidly, and the leaves extend outwards in several directions, balancing the weight of the fruit below. Much of the pale ground remains untouched. This generous negative space isolates every stem and contour, encouraging the kind of attentive viewing central to botanical illustration. A small botanical caption at the foot of the plate anchors the otherwise floating specimen within the conventions of classification.
Context and significance
Redouté’s achievement lay in making accuracy and elegance appear inseparable. In this plate, the viewer can study the junctions of stalk and fruit, the branching pattern of the veins and the subtle variation between leaves, yet the specimen never feels like a diagram assembled from separate parts. It retains the irregularity and ease of something freshly gathered. The restrained setting is important: without a vase, table or landscape, the cultivated cherry becomes the sole subject, examined for its structure but also appreciated for its colour, abundance and graceful growth.
The plate exemplifies an era when botanical books could operate as works of knowledge and visual culture simultaneously. Its appeal rests not only in the saturated red cherries but in Redouté’s quieter observations—the roughness of the twig, the softened shadow beneath a leaf and the gradual transition from bright to shaded green. These details turn a familiar fruiting branch into a sustained study of surface, volume and living form.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
