Seguir leyendoFranz Christophe’s Cerveja preta Guinness’s Stout. Marca Cabeça de porco, dated 1900, is an exuberant Portuguese-language advertisement built around a vivid social tableau. Against an emphatic red ground, a man raises a glass on the left while, opposite him, a seated woman lifts her own drink with a baby on her lap. The dark stout bottle at lower right and the memorable pig’s-head emblem turn this animated scene into a direct, highly legible piece of commercial theatre.
The poster belongs to a period when chromolithographic advertising gave manufacturers and importers an increasingly colourful means of distinguishing branded goods. Guinness, the Dublin brewer whose stout had long circulated internationally, is presented here not simply by name but through local language, an importer’s credit and an instantly recognisable pictorial mark. The wording “Unicos importadores A. Trommel & Co. Santos & S. Paulo” places the advertisement within the commercial world of Brazil, linking an imported Irish drink to the port of Santos and the rapidly expanding market of São Paulo.
A closer look
The composition is deliberately frontal and compressed. Little conventional depth separates the figures from the background; instead, Christophe relies on silhouette, gesture and blocks of saturated colour. The man’s white shirt, rolled sleeves and red neckerchief stand out crisply against the scarlet field. His tilted glass and animated expression create an upward movement, while the spade leaning beside him introduces a quieter vertical accent and suggests the visual vocabulary of labour.
On the right, the woman’s blue blouse supplies the strongest cool contrast to the surrounding reds. She and the child form a compact group, but their gestures prevent the arrangement from becoming static: her glass is raised, while the baby’s outstretched arms and light expression add a slightly comic domestic energy. The pairing of working figure, mother and child gives the advertisement an unusually broad human cast, surrounding the product with sociability rather than isolating it as a still-life object.
Typography anchors the activity. “Cerveja preta Guinness’s Stout” runs prominently across the upper portion in bold lettering, immediately identifying the drink for a Portuguese-speaking audience. Finer white text along the lower edge names the importers and locations, while the bottle occupies the lower right like a visual full stop. Its dark body and detailed label are particularly effective against the red ground. A narrow cream border contains the saturated palette, and touches of green, brown, black and white keep the design lively without weakening its strong graphic hierarchy.
Context and significance
At the turn of the twentieth century, commercial posters and labels increasingly had to do more than provide information: they needed to establish a brand at a glance. Christophe’s design achieves this through repetition and association. The Guinness name appears in large type, the bottle makes the commodity tangible, and the pig’s head offers the kind of compact emblem that could remain memorable even in a visually crowded setting. Humour and directness take precedence over refinement, giving the design its robust character.
The Portuguese copy is as significant as the imagery. Rather than functioning as a generic Guinness advertisement, the poster addresses a particular market through its language and its reference to Santos and São Paulo. That meeting of international brand, local importer and playful popular imagery makes the work an engaging document of early modern advertising culture—as notable for its commercial geography as for its forceful red, blue and green design.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
