Seguir leyendoAlphonse Mucha’s 1901 Combinaisons Ornementales se Multipliant à l’Infini à l’Aide du Miroir transforms a compact field of ornament into an intricate choreography of loops, spirals and curling, plant-like lines. Strong reds, greens and golden yellows move across a pale beige ground, organised around a central axis yet enlivened by variations in colour and weight. The composition is densely worked without becoming congested: its broad curves lead the eye continuously from one motif to the next, while a fine red border gives the profusion of forms a precise graphic boundary.
The design belonged to an unusual pattern book associated with Mucha, George Auriol and Maurice Pillard Verneuil. Published in 1901 as a set of 60 colour-lithographed plates, the volume offered ornamental ideas derived from plants, birds, insects and other natural forms. Mucha contributed eleven plates. Its title—approximately, “Ornamental combinations multiplying to infinity with the aid of the mirror”—describes its ingenious premise: the motifs were intended to be viewed through two joined mirrors, which repeated and extended them into kaleidoscopic arrangements. Rather than presenting ornament as a single, finished scheme, the book gave designers a visual system from which innumerable patterns could be generated.
A closer look
The square composition is held together by symmetry, although its details resist rigid repetition. In the upper left, a red tendril curls in a loose, vine-like loop; across from it, a fuller green form turns inward with a comparable but not identical motion. Lower down, a yellow spiral introduces a warmer, brighter accent, balanced by a firmly drawn red coil in the opposite quadrant. These forms seem to expand and contract across the page, their differing line widths creating movement within an otherwise flat decorative space.
Closer inspection reveals how carefully the larger curves are connected. Slender lines bridge the more emphatic coloured motifs, sometimes meeting at small circular joints that establish a subtle visual rhythm. Around the edges, knot-like details and corner ornaments mediate between the central pattern and the narrow red frame. The pale ground is equally important: it opens small intervals between the interlaced lines, preventing the strong complementary contrast of red and green from overwhelming the design.
There is no conventional modelling of light or recession. Colour is applied in clear, graphic areas, and the motifs occupy the surface rather than appearing to sit within an illusionistic space. This flatness allows contour to carry the composition. A curve can read at once as stem, flourish and abstract line—an ambiguity central to the decorative vitality of the design.
Context and significance
The folio emerged during the flourishing of Art Nouveau at the turn of the twentieth century, when artists and designers sought alternatives to the strict separation of fine and applied art. Natural growth provided an especially fertile vocabulary: stems, wings, petals and shells could be simplified into structures suited to graphic design, textiles, metalwork or architectural decoration. Mucha’s contribution brings the flowing line associated with his work into a format intended not simply to be admired, but adapted and recombined.
The mirror device made that principle of transformation literal. A relatively contained motif could become a radial pattern, an extended repeat or a seemingly boundless ornamental field. This particular design retains the clarity needed for such multiplication while remaining engaging on its own: poised between botanical suggestion and pure abstraction, it demonstrates how a handful of coloured curves can generate both order and exuberance.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
