Seguir leyendoTitled “San Marcos,” this elegant US Geological Survey topographical map was created in 1911 and published in 1931, preserving an early twentieth-century view of a pivotal section of Central Texas. At a scale of 1:125,000, it situates San Marcos within the broader landscape of the Texas Hill Country and the river valleys that shaped settlement, travel, and agriculture. The delayed publication gives the map a layered historical interest: it presents survey work from the pre-automobile-boom era through the refined cartographic standards of the interwar USGS. San Marcos appears as the central focus, already notable for its clear spring-fed river, its strategic position between Austin and San Antonio, and its growing educational presence.
Produced by the US Geological Survey, the map reflects the disciplined clarity that made early American topographical mapping indispensable to engineers, landowners, travelers, and public agencies. Contour lines articulate the rise and fall of the Hill Country terrain, while waterways, railroads, roads, towns, and county landscapes are rendered with the restrained precision characteristic of USGS design. The color scheme and line work are typical of the period: functional yet quietly beautiful, with hydrographic features and relief carefully distinguished for immediate legibility. Rather than offering a decorative fantasy, the map presents a measured portrait of place—one built from field observation, triangulation, and the federal ambition to understand the nation’s varied terrain.
The landscape shown is defined by water and elevation. The San Marcos River, one of the great spring-fed rivers of Texas, anchors the map both geographically and historically, flowing through a region where fertile bottoms and reliable water encouraged settlement. The Guadalupe River also appears, giving structure to the eastern portion of the sheet and connecting the San Marcos area to a wider network of towns, farms, and transport routes. Contours reveal the transition between rolling uplands, wooded hills, river terraces, and valleys, with the terrain becoming especially expressive toward Wimberley and the Hill Country. These subtle variations in relief tell a story of movement, habitation, and agricultural possibility.
The map records a constellation of communities at a formative moment in their development. San Marcos is joined by Martindale, Maxwell, Uhland, Kyle, Buda, Wimberley, Seguin, and Luling, each positioned within the web of roads, railways, and river corridors that linked rural Texas to regional markets. Rail lines were especially important in this period, shaping the growth of towns and determining how cotton, livestock, timber, and manufactured goods moved through the region. Some routes shown correspond to corridors that would later become major modern highways, underscoring the continuity between early surveyed pathways and the transportation geography of contemporary Central Texas.
As a historical document, “San Marcos” captures the area before the explosive suburban growth that would later transform the corridor between Austin and San Antonio. It shows a landscape still dominated by rivers, farms, small towns, rail connections, and the measured geometry of rural roads. San Marcos itself, now strongly associated with Texas State University and the recreational life of its river, appears here in a quieter but already significant role as a county seat, educational center, and gateway to the Hill Country. The map’s contours, settlements, and waterways together offer a richly textured view of Central Texas at the threshold of modernity.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
