Seguir leyendoTitled “Spring Hill,” this 1:24,000-scale United States Geological Survey topographical map was published in 1959 using survey data from 1953, capturing a mid-century portrait of eastern Connecticut before later decades of suburban growth and institutional expansion reshaped the region. Centered on Storrs and Mansfield, the map records a landscape where village roads, wooded uplands, farms, streams, and academic life meet in a finely observed terrain. Storrs is especially notable as the home of the University of Connecticut, whose presence would become increasingly influential in the area’s development. In the map’s careful balance of natural and built features, one sees a community poised between rural New England continuity and the accelerating transformations of the postwar era.
The USGS style gives “Spring Hill” both scientific authority and quiet visual elegance. Fine contour lines describe the roll and lift of the land, revealing hills, valleys, ridgelines, and subtle changes in elevation that might otherwise disappear in a conventional road map. Green areas indicate woodland and vegetation, while blue waterways and ponds punctuate the terrain with clarity. Roads, settlements, and civic features are organized with the disciplined precision for which USGS quadrangles are renowned. At 1:24,000, the map offers an intimate level of detail: local lanes, minor streams, slopes, and small water bodies are all rendered as part of a coherent geographic portrait, inviting both historical study and close visual exploration.
Storrs and Mansfield appear here within a richly textured regional setting shaped by water, woodland, and glacially influenced topography. The Willimantic River provides one of the important natural lines through the area, part of a broader watershed that has long influenced settlement, transportation, and industry in eastern Connecticut. Coventry Lake, along with numerous smaller ponds and wetlands, speaks to the watery character of the region, where low-lying basins and upland drainage patterns define the landscape. These features are not merely decorative: on a topographical map, they explain the placement of roads, the persistence of wooded tracts, and the clustering of settlement on more favorable ground. The result is a map that reads like a geographic anatomy of rural Connecticut.
The surrounding countryside evokes a mid-twentieth-century New England of small communities, winding roads, and interspersed forest. Mansfield’s terrain is shown as a mosaic of elevations and land uses, with the contours suggesting modest but persistent relief rather than dramatic mountain scenery. Nearby wooded areas, including the broader landscape associated with Natchaug State Forest, point to eastern Connecticut’s enduring forest cover and conservation history. Marked highways and local roads trace the circulation network linking Storrs, Mansfield, Coventry, and neighboring places, while smaller lanes hint at farms, homesteads, and institutional grounds. In this way, the map preserves not just geography, but the spatial rhythm of a region before contemporary road widening, campus expansion, and residential development altered its patterns.
As a historical document, “Spring Hill” is especially compelling because it captures Storrs at a pivotal moment. The University of Connecticut had already established the town’s educational identity, yet the surrounding landscape still retained a distinctly rural structure, visible in the dispersed roads, wooded slopes, and modest settlement density. Since the 1950s, the university and its associated infrastructure have helped drive demographic change, commercial growth, and altered land use throughout the area. The map therefore offers a valuable benchmark: a precise record of what existed before later expansion. Its combination of technical mapping, natural detail, and cultural context makes it a fascinating window into Connecticut’s postwar landscape, where education, environment, and village geography were beginning to intersect in newly consequential ways.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Titled “Spring Hill,” this 1:24,000-scale United States Geological Survey topographical map was published in 1959 using survey data from 1953, capturing a mid-century portrait of eastern Connecticut before later decades of suburban growth and institutional expansion reshaped the region.
