Step into the world of 18th-century navigation with Captain Greenvile Collins’ masterful chart, “The River Avon from the Severn to the Citty of Bristoll.” This exquisite map, created in 1774, captures the winding journey of the River Avon as it meanders from the broad Severn Estuary to the bustling heart of Bristol. Oriented with the south at the top—a charming quirk of period cartography—the map immerses the viewer in the landscape as it was known to merchants, mariners, and explorers of the age. The dedication to Robert Yate, Mayor of Bristol and Master of the Merchants Hall, underscores the map’s deep connection to the city’s mercantile heritage and its vital role in British maritime commerce.
Captain Greenvile Collins, the map’s creator, stands as a towering figure in the history of English hydrography. Commissioned by King Charles II and supported by the legendary Samuel Pepys, Collins was entrusted with the monumental task of charting the coasts of Great Britain. His work culminated in the celebrated “Great Britain’s Coasting Pilot,” the first original sea atlas produced by an Englishman. Collins’ meticulous surveys, conducted under the auspices of Trinity House and aboard royal yachts, set a new standard for accuracy and detail, transforming British nautical cartography and ensuring safer passage for generations of sailors.
The map itself is a testament to both artistry and precision. Its decorative cartouche, featuring a stately sailing vessel navigating the dramatic Avon Gorge, evokes the romance and peril of riverine travel in the Georgian era. Throughout the chart, delicate calligraphy and a finely rendered compass rose guide the eye along the river’s serpentine course. Depth soundings, sandbanks, and navigational hazards are marked with care, reflecting Collins’ commitment to practical utility as well as aesthetic appeal. Every bend and shoal of the Avon is captured with an elegance that elevates this chart beyond mere utility into the realm of art.
Historically, this map offers a fascinating window into a pivotal moment in British history. It marks the very spot where King William III landed on his return from Ireland in 1690, a key event in the Williamite War that shaped the fate of the British Isles. The detailed depiction of the Avon Gorge, a natural wonder carved through limestone cliffs, and the bustling port city of Bristol, then one of England’s foremost centers of trade, situates the viewer at the crossroads of commerce, conflict, and natural beauty. The surrounding regions of Gloucestershire and Somerset, their boundaries subtly indicated, further ground the map in its rich geographic context.
The settlements along the Avon—Bristol, Portishead, Pill, Shirehampton, King’s Weston, Clifton, and Hotwells—are meticulously labelled, each playing its part in the vibrant tapestry of river life. The map’s focus on both political boundaries and physical features makes it an invaluable resource for historians, collectors, and connoisseurs of cartographic art. Whether you are drawn to the map’s historical resonance, its technical mastery, or its sheer visual allure, Collins’ “The River Avon from the Severn to the Citty of Bristoll” stands as a crowning achievement of British mapmaking, offering a timeless glimpse into the waterways and communities that shaped an era.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
