Seguir leyendoPaul Scheurich’s Pilsener Brauhaus GmbH Berlin, created in 1910, turns a brewery advertisement into a compact piece of comic theatre. A moustachioed, bald-headed man sits heavily at the centre of the design, his dark clothing set against a field of warm yellow and beige. Beside him, a small table supports a pale glass of beer and a slender candlestick, while an offset shield bearing a beer mug supplies the brewery emblem. The tightly cropped, asymmetrical arrangement gives the figure an immediate presence: relaxed in posture, yet rendered with enough graphic force to command attention from a distance.
The poster belongs to a period in which commercial artists were developing an increasingly concise visual language for the modern city. Rather than depending upon elaborate narrative or densely packed information, designs of this kind used memorable silhouettes, limited colour and distinctive lettering to fix a brand in the public imagination. Scheurich, a German artist recognised for his elegant decorative manner, balances that promotional clarity with wit and ornament. The result is not merely informative; it gives the Pilsener Brauhaus a genial character through the personality of its seated patron.
A closer look
The man’s broad black form provides the composition with its principal weight. His rounded pink face, prominent moustache and bald head emerge crisply from the darker mass of his suit, while small linear details at the cuffs prevent the silhouette from becoming entirely solid. One hand rests upon his knee, its softly coloured fingers deliberately simplified. The pose feels casual and self-contained, an effective contrast to the emphatic blocks of colour surrounding him.
To the right, the table introduces a cluster of finer verticals. The beer glass is pale and understated rather than rendered with illusionistic sparkle; like the rest of the poster, it is reduced to the elements necessary for recognition. The adjacent candlestick adds an unexpectedly domestic note, suggesting the comfortable surroundings of a beer hall or drinking room without describing the wider interior. Scheurich leaves much of the beige ground open, allowing these few objects to carry the setting.
In the upper left, the shield and beer-mug device acts as a visual counterweight to the table below. Its red-and-white striping punctuates the otherwise earthy palette of warm yellow, dark brown, black and soft pink. At lower right, the words “Pilsener Brauhaus G.m.b.H. in Berlin” flow in decorative script. The lettering is integrated into the composition rather than confined to a separate caption: its curves soften the figure’s dark angular contours and lend the company name a polished, sociable air.
Context and significance
Early twentieth-century advertising demanded images that could communicate rapidly amid the visual competition of an urban street. Scheurich’s design answers that need through reduction. Depth is almost entirely suppressed, tonal modelling kept to a minimum and every element assigned a clear graphic role. The figure attracts attention, the beer and emblem establish the subject, and the cursive inscription identifies the business. Warm colour makes the design lively, but it is the economy of the arrangement that gives it its lasting distinction.
The poster also demonstrates how readily commercial imagery could absorb the decorative ambitions of its period. Scheurich does not separate branding from characterisation: the brewery’s identity is built from the man’s affable bearing, the heraldic emblem and the rhythm of the lettering. More than a century later, its appeal lies in that unusually deft mixture of practical advertising, bold caricature and urbane graphic design.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
