Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Hispida Argentea, published in 1817, gives a single rose branch the clarity and poise of a formal portrait. One pale, fully opened flower occupies the centre of the composition, accompanied by pink-tipped buds and sharply articulated green foliage. Set against an unbroken cream ground, the plant appears at once natural and carefully composed: its curving stem establishes a gentle vertical rhythm, while leaves and buds extend asymmetrically into the surrounding space.
Redouté was celebrated in his lifetime as the “Raphael of flowers”, an epithet that reflects the unusual status his botanical studies achieved between science and art. Working in the refined botanical tradition of early nineteenth-century France, he became particularly renowned for his roses. Such illustrations served a documentary purpose, recording the distinguishing structures of cultivated plants, yet Redouté’s plates were also prized for their grace, delicacy and lucid arrangement. Here, botanical exactitude never overwhelms the sensuous character of the flower: observation and ornament remain in careful balance.
A closer look
The open rose is built from overlapping petals rendered in finely modulated whites, soft greys and the faintest blush tones. Its outer petals loosen and turn away from the centre, creating a convincing impression of weight and softness without strong shadow. Minute marks within the flower suggest its reproductive structures, while restrained tonal changes distinguish one pale petal from the next. The result is remarkably legible despite the near-monochrome bloom.
Above and to the right, several closed buds introduce stronger colour. Their pale pink surfaces deepen towards the tips, allowing the viewer to read successive stages of growth within a single branch. The buds also provide a compositional counterweight to the broad flower below. Around them, pointed sepals and slender stems bring a more angular structure to the plate, contrasting with the rose’s rounded, densely layered form.
The foliage is particularly vivid towards the lower left. Serrated margins are crisply defined, and fine veins spread through each leaf in branching patterns. Individual leaves turn in different directions, revealing subtle shifts between brighter and more muted greens; this variation prevents the branch from appearing diagrammatically flat. Small thorns punctuate the stem, an easily missed detail that completes the plant’s physical character. Beneath the specimen, the names “Rosa Hispida Argentea” and “Rosier hispide à fleurs Argentés” identify the subject in elegant lettering, anchoring the airy botanical arrangement.
Context and significance
Redouté worked at a moment when botanical illustration was essential to the classification, study and circulation of plant knowledge. Before colour photography, an accomplished illustrator had to make structure immediately intelligible while preserving distinctions of surface, habit and hue. Redouté’s particular achievement lay in doing this without sacrificing compositional refinement. His specimens occupy generous fields of negative space, isolated for close study but arranged with the visual judgement of still-life painting.
Rosa Hispida Argentea exemplifies that dual purpose. Its labelled stem is precise enough to be read as a botanical record, yet the measured sweep of the branch, the restrained contrast between cream, green and blush pink, and the progression from bud to open bloom give the plate an independent decorative presence. It rewards close attention not through abundance, but through the quiet accumulation of observed details: a thorn, a turned leaf, a darkened bud tip and the almost imperceptible shading within a white flower.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
