Read the full product descriptionJohn Woodhouse Audubon’s Lepus Texianus, Texian Hare. Male. Natural size. (1845–1848) captures a poised, life-size study of a hare observed with scientific precision and quiet drama. Working in the mid-19th century—when natural history was undergoing a golden age—Audubon focused on fidelity to form, posture, and texture. Here, the animal’s sleek body is set low among scrubby grasses, its alert eye and finely drawn whiskers suggesting a creature equally attuned to hiding and flight. The title itself signals the era’s drive to classify and map the continent’s fauna, presenting the “Texian hare” as a distinct subject worthy of close, empirical attention.
This fine art print is produced by The Unique Maps Co. on museum-grade, acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas, ensuring rich color and long-lasting clarity. Choose from a range of sizes with optional matting and framing to suit your space. We offer tasteful personalization—such as a period-appropriate caption, date line, or dedication—and can adjust margins and background tone to echo the feel of 19th-century natural-history plates.
Audubon (1812–1862), son of the famed John James Audubon, was a gifted field artist and naturalist in his own right. He contributed substantially to The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, translating firsthand observation into carefully composed images that balanced art and science. His method bridged field sketching and studio refinement, and many works—originally issued as hand-colored lithographs—achieve an almost tactile fidelity to fur, muscle, and stance.
The subject here—identified on the plate as Lepus texianus, the Texian hare—speaks to the 1840s fascination with regional species. Rather than staging a dramatic chase, Audubon offers a moment of studied stillness at “natural size,” turning the viewer into a patient observer. The crouched posture and well-sited setting evoke the open grasslands and scrub of the American Southwest, embodying a 19th-century vision of wildlife presented not as spectacle but as evidence: measured, named, and rendered with care.
Visually, the plate’s warm, tawny oranges and sunlit yellows are tempered by pale whites and softened earth greens, creating a harmonious field palette. Fine, precise strokes articulate the hare’s mottled coat—its camouflage—while broader, feathered washes blur the background into atmosphere, keeping the eye on the animal’s profile and luminous eye. The effect is both instructional and beautiful: a statement piece for libraries, studies, and contemporary interiors that favor natural textures and warm neutrals. As a print, it pairs elegantly with other Victorian zoological illustrations and botanical studies.
An inspired choice for lovers of wildlife, 19th-century art, and American natural history, this print makes a thoughtful gift for Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, housewarmings, or for anyone recently returned from travels through Texas and the American Southwest.
If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.
You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.
You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.
This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
