Across a horizontal field of warm cream, rounded green leaves, curling stems and stylised red blossoms gather into an intricate central pattern. The forms appear to grow and interlace, yet their placement is carefully balanced: organic movement is disciplined by symmetry, repeated curves and the slender border enclosing the design.
Created at the height of Art Nouveau, the work reflects the decorative language with which Mucha became closely identified. The Czech artist was celebrated for posters, illustrations and decorative panels in which natural forms supplied both subject and structure. Here, however, there is no theatrical figure or narrative scene. Flowers and foliage take precedence, demonstrating how the era’s interest in nature could be translated into a complete system of line, colour and ornament. The design belongs to a broader Art Nouveau ambition to bring artistic invention into the decorative arts, dissolving rigid distinctions between fine art, graphic design and applied pattern.
A closer look
The composition is anchored by a broad central arrangement of leaves and flowers. Rich greens dominate, ranging across rounded leaf clusters and long, pliant tendrils, while restrained red accents punctuate the foliage. Brown supplies a darker, earthy counterweight, particularly within the circular motif near the lower centre. Against the pale ground, these largely flat areas of colour remain crisply legible, with little reliance on conventional shading or spatial depth.
Movement comes instead from contour. Stems bend, loop and pass between neighbouring forms, creating a rhythm that carries the eye from one cluster to the next. In the upper left, small leaves and compact rounded flowers produce an especially intricate passage; elsewhere, dotted details enliven the interiors of the botanical shapes. The lower circular element condenses the same vocabulary into a more concentrated medallion-like form, its nested brown and green pattern providing a visual pivot beneath the spreading foliage.
The surrounding details are quieter but essential. Curved ornament along the upper edge echoes the botanical lines within, while a more intricate linear passage at the left introduces a firmer structural note. A thin border contains the otherwise expansive growth, and the small encircled number ‘30’ at the lower right offers a precise graphic counterpoint to the flowing plant forms. Such details reveal the design’s double character: it feels abundant and animated, but nothing is casually placed.

Mucha’s name became synonymous with the sinuous contours, botanical arabesques and integrated decorative schemes of fin-de-siècle visual culture. Although he is often remembered for images of elegant women framed by elaborate halos and flowers, this design isolates one of the foundations of his visual language. Nature is not copied botanically; it is edited, flattened and reorganised. Leaves become repeated units, blossoms become accents, and stems function almost like drawn lines in a piece of calligraphy.
The result encapsulates a central tension within Art Nouveau: the apparent freedom of natural growth held within exacting formal order. Warm browns and red notes animate the dominant greens, while the cream ground prevents the pattern from becoming visually congested. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
