Continua a leggerePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Alpina Pendulina, dated 1817, gives a single rose plant the clarity and presence of a formal portrait. An open pink flower occupies the centre of the composition, its five softly modelled petals spreading around a pale yellow heart, while a rounded bud, slender branching stems and serrated leaves extend into the surrounding cream ground. The arrangement is asymmetrical yet carefully poised: botanical structure remains fully legible, but the plant never appears stiff or diagrammatic.
Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical illustrators working in early nineteenth-century France. His flower studies belong to a culture in which botany, publishing and cultivated taste were closely connected; precise images allowed plants to be examined and compared, while their graceful presentation appealed well beyond specialist scientific circles. Roses became particularly associated with Redouté through his celebrated publication Les Roses, issued between 1817 and 1824. In these studies, close observation is matched by an exceptional sensitivity to contour, colour and the individual growth habit of each specimen.
A closer look
The open bloom provides the first point of attention. Its petals shift from near-white pink around the centre to a fuller rose at their gently curled edges, with minute tonal changes suggesting folds, shallow creases and the thinness of the petal surface. Rather than presenting the flower as a perfectly symmetrical emblem, Redouté preserves its small irregularities: one petal overlaps another, the edges turn at slightly different angles, and the central stamens form a compact, warm-yellow cluster.
From the flower, the eye follows the stem upwards towards the bud at the upper right. Green sepals enclose its rounded form, through which a restrained blush of pink is beginning to emerge. Below, compound leaves spread out in alternating directions. Their sharply toothed margins create a crisp rhythm against the pale background, while fine veins divide each leaflet into subtly varied fields of olive, sage and deeper green. The stems bend lightly at their junctions, recording the plant’s natural, uneven growth rather than imposing a rigid central axis.
Less immediately noticeable is the faint root structure towards the lower part of the plate. Rendered in restrained grey-brown lines, it extends the study beneath the visible foliage and gives the composition a scientific completeness. The generous unmarked space around the specimen is equally purposeful: it isolates every contour, allowing the bud, leaflets, stem and flower to be read both as parts of a botanical subject and as elements in an elegant design. In the lower margin, the French wording “Rosier des Alpes à fruits pendants” identifies the rose through one of its characteristic features.
Context and significance
Redouté worked at a moment when botanical illustration served several audiences at once. European interest in collecting, classifying and cultivating plants encouraged publications in which accuracy was essential, yet these books were also prized as refined visual objects. His achievement lay in holding those demands together. Leaves are sufficiently precise to reveal their veining and serration; the flower is sufficiently nuanced to convey its particular form; and the whole plant is arranged with the restraint of a carefully considered still life.
Rosa Alpina Pendulina exemplifies that balance. Nothing distracts from the specimen, yet the plate is far from austere. The curved stem, suspended bud and open bloom create a quiet progression from growth to flowering, while the contrast between fresh pink, varied greens and warm cream gives the study its enduring visual freshness.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
