The plate belongs to Redouté’s celebrated early nineteenth-century series Les Liliacées, produced at a moment when botanical illustration served scientific classification while also answering a taste for highly refined images of the natural world. Redouté worked at the intersection of botany, horticulture and elite French culture, becoming particularly associated with precise yet graceful studies of flowers. His art is distinguished not simply by accuracy, but by an ability to make the identifying structures of a plant—the turn of a petal, the junction of stem and leaf, the texture of a bulb—visually compelling in their own right.
A closer look
The eye is drawn first to the crown of flowers, where tones move from pale blush to deeper rose and magenta. Fine veins run along the petals, following their flared contours and lending each bloom a slightly different character. Within them, bright yellow anthers provide concentrated points of colour. The flowers overlap without becoming crowded: some face outward, while others turn to the side, allowing their tubular form and layered structure to be read from several angles.
Below, the long leaves spread diagonally from the centre, interrupting the strong upright movement of the flowering stems. Their cool and varied greens set off the warmth of the blooms, while subtle tonal modelling suggests curvature, thickness and surface texture. Redouté pays close attention to the edges and veins of the foliage; even tiny hair-like details contribute to the impression of a closely observed living specimen. The generous negative space around these outward-reaching leaves prevents the composition from feeling dense and makes every contour easy to follow.
The exposed bulb forms a compact counterweight to the airy flowers above. Its glossy brown surface is built from softly modulated tones, with overlapping layers visible around the neck and fine roots descending beneath it. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
