Slender green stems rise from a finely described root system, opening into vivid blue blossoms near the upper centre of the composition. Broad, blade-like leaves give the plant a strong vertical rhythm, while the pale, largely unoccupied ground allows every curve, bud and branching stem to remain distinct.
The plate belongs to Les liliacées, Redouté’s celebrated botanical series published between 1805 and 1816. Produced during a period of rapidly expanding interest in natural history and classification, such florilegiums united scientific scrutiny with highly cultivated design. Redouté’s achievement lies in making these aims appear inseparable: the specimen is sufficiently precise to be studied, yet its placement on the page has the balance and refinement of an independent work of art. Rather than crowding the plant with explanatory detail, he gives it space, turning botanical observation into a disciplined form of portraiture.
A closer look
The eye begins at the lower centre, where delicate brown roots spread in fine, tapering lines. Their earth-toned intricacy forms a quiet counterpoint to the cleaner greens above. As the roots merge into the stems, subtle changes of colour suggest their transition into living growth. The leaves rise around them in long, gently bending forms, their fine venation visible without disturbing the broader sweep of each blade.
Higher up, the stems divide and curve with an understated irregularity. Some carry tightly held buds, while others support fully opened flowers, allowing different stages of growth to appear within one compact arrangement. The principal blossoms are a rich, cool blue, deepening around their centres and relieved by small pale highlights along the petals. These variations prevent the blue from reading as a single flat note: each flower appears separately articulated, with its own angle and degree of openness.
The generous negative space is as carefully managed as the plant itself. Nothing interrupts the upward movement of the stems, and the absence of a setting keeps attention fixed on structure, proportion and colour. Beneath the roots, the labels “Aristea cyanea” and “Aristea bleu” identify the specimen in restrained lettering. Their placement completes the plate’s characteristic movement from observed plant to classified subject.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
