Continua a leggereLeonetto Cappiello’s Bière du Fort-Carré. Saint-Dizier, created in 1907, turns a beer advertisement into a piece of emphatic visual theatre. A broad, muscular figure in a brilliant yellow coat raises a foaming glass against a near-black field of shadowed casks. Red gloves, blue-green clothing and white fur trim sharpen the silhouette, while the figure’s feathered hat and richly patterned costume introduce a playful note of historical pageantry. Everything is enlarged, simplified and arranged for immediate recognition.
Italian-born Cappiello established his reputation in Paris at a moment when the illustrated poster was becoming central to urban commercial culture. Rather than filling his designs with descriptive detail, he frequently isolated a single memorable character or object against a dark ground. The result was a new kind of advertising clarity: an image could be understood quickly from across a street, while an unusual figure or gesture remained associated with the brand. Bière du Fort-Carré demonstrates that method particularly well, combining bold colour, theatrical characterisation and a prominently displayed drink into one compact visual idea.
A closer look
The figure occupies the right-hand side of the vertical composition, leaning into the poster rather than standing in formal symmetry. His raised arm extends towards the centre-left, carrying the eye directly to the glass and its uneven crown of white froth. The pose has the expansive quality of a toast, yet the scale of the body and the emphatic red glove give it the force of a heraldic emblem. A fine dark contour keeps the yellow coat sharply separate from the background.
Cappiello builds the costume through strong areas of flat colour. The coat’s warm golden yellow dominates, interrupted by white edging, intricate ornament and flashes of saturated red. Cooler blue and green passages beneath it prevent the palette from becoming monotonous. The feather curving from the hat adds a lighter flourish above the figure’s substantial form, while the largely obscured barrels behind him create just enough context to identify a brewing environment without competing for attention.
Typography completes the composition rather than merely labelling it. Across the upper portion, “BIÈRE du FORT-CARRÉ” appears in large yellow lettering that echoes the coat, with “SAINT-DIZIER” placed beneath in green. The words emerge crisply from the dark ground and establish a clear sequence: brand name, place name, character, then glass. Even the foam functions graphically, its pale, textured shape becoming a small but conspicuous highlight among the broad blocks of colour.
Context and significance
By the early twentieth century, posters had to compete within crowded public spaces, and Cappiello’s approach was ideally suited to that environment. He reduced commercial messages to striking contrasts and distinctive protagonists, helping to shift poster design away from elaborate illustrative scenes towards a more concentrated language of brand identity. His figures often behave almost like visual mascots: exaggerated enough to lodge in the memory, but sufficiently clear to be read in an instant.
Here, the historical-looking costume lends the advertisement a sense of ceremony and inherited tradition, while the exuberant pose keeps it modern and immediate. That tension gives the design its enduring character. It is at once an advertisement, a comic performance and a highly disciplined arrangement of lettering, silhouette and colour—an example of how Cappiello made commercial imagery memorable without sacrificing graphic economy.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
