Bitter Lepourc, an anonymous beverage poster dating from around 1910, centres on a fashionably dressed woman whose wide-brimmed hat is heaped with cherries and foliage. Her face, framed by dark curls, rises above a cluster of yellow flowers, while rich reds in her clothing and hat stand out against softened greens. Across the upper portion, the product name appears in large pale-blue capitals: a clear commercial headline paired with a characterful, immediately memorable figure.

The poster belongs to the flourishing world of early twentieth-century advertising, when illustrated placards gave beverages and other everyday goods distinct visual identities in increasingly crowded public spaces. Rather than explaining the drink at length, Bitter Lepourc associates it with abundance, sociability and decorative spectacle. The wording below the figure names “Georges BOUILLON” and Seraing, the Belgian city, anchoring the otherwise theatrical design in a particular commercial setting. Its anonymous authorship is characteristic of much popular printed imagery from the period, in which the advertised name often mattered more than that of the designer.

A closer look

The woman occupies almost the full height of the composition, bringing her close to the viewer and leaving little room for narrative distraction. Her hat forms the poster’s most expansive shape: lace-like edging traces its broad brim, while glossy red cherries, dark leaves and red ornament create a dense crown above her face. These details establish a visual link between the figure and the bitter’s likely fruit-led branding without requiring a bottle or serving scene to dominate the design.

Below, the costume supplies another layer of pattern and colour. Red floral motifs punctuate the pale fabric of the sleeves, a finely described ribbon encircles the neck, and the yellow blossoms at the chest introduce a concentrated flash of warmth. Highlights across the face and stronger shadows around the clothing give the figure more modelling than the indistinct background, where muted green forms suggest foliage. This contrast keeps the setting atmospheric while allowing the woman’s expression, costume and elaborate headwear to carry the advertisement.

The typography operates as part of the composition rather than as a separate caption. “BITTER LEPOURC” stretches broadly above the sitter, its cool lettering set against the warmer reds and yellows below. At the foot, the smaller line of text provides the practical commercial information, establishing a familiar poster hierarchy: brand first, persuasive personality second, proprietor and place last. Even at a glance, the eye moves cleanly from name to face and then down through the flowers to the lower inscription.

Context and significance

Bitters occupied a distinctive position in European drinking culture, promoted both for their flavour and through the older language of herbal preparations and aperitifs. Advertising for such products frequently relied upon memorable names, vivid personalities and appetising natural motifs rather than literal descriptions of ingredients. Here, cherries, leaves and flowers turn the product’s identity into a decorative ensemble, while the central figure gives the brand a human presence.

Bitter Lepourc is especially engaging as an example of commercial art whose maker has receded from view but whose graphic strategy remains legible. Its blend of portraiture, fashion detail, emphatic lettering and local trade information captures the visual directness of advertising in the years before and around the First World War. Look beyond the cheerful central character and the poster reveals a carefully controlled design, balancing ornamental richness with the immediate clarity demanded by the street.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
