The flower occupies the upper centre of the composition, its soft pink folds deepening towards the crowded heart, while two red-tipped buds, serrated leaves and a slender thorned stem extend around it. Set against an open cream ground, the specimen appears at once botanically particular and carefully staged: a study of growth transformed into an elegant floral portrait.
Redouté was celebrated as the “Raphael of flowers”, a reputation founded on his ability to unite exact observation with exceptional compositional poise. His flower studies belong to an early nineteenth-century culture in which illustrated botanical books served both scientific and aesthetic purposes. They made the structures of plants legible to a broad audience while presenting them as objects of cultivated admiration. This plate comes from the period of Redouté’s renowned work on roses, published between 1817 and 1824, when his precise line and delicately modulated colour helped establish an enduring model for botanical illustration.
A closer look
The open rose is the visual centre, but it is not treated as a simple circle of petals. Its outer folds broaden and curl away from the centre, while the inner petals gather into tighter, darker layers. Pale blush pink shifts through warmer rose tones, creating volume without heavy shadow. The result conveys the characteristic abundance of the centifolia rose—its name referring to the impression of innumerable petals—yet each fold remains distinct.
To the upper right, two closed buds provide a sharper note of colour. Their vivid red tips emerge from green sepals, forming a compact contrast with the expansive bloom beside them. Below, the foliage spreads diagonally towards the lower left. Individual leaves are articulated through fine veins, toothed edges and small tonal changes that suggest their natural curvature. Some turn towards the light; others angle away, introducing variation into what might otherwise have been a strictly symmetrical specimen.
Redouté also preserves less ornamental features of the plant. Small thorns punctuate the stem, and fine hairs are visible around the buds, details that temper the flower’s luxuriance with close botanical scrutiny. The generous negative space prevents the arrangement from becoming crowded and allows each branching stem to be read clearly. At the bottom, the inscription Rosa Centifolia Burgundiaca — La Cent-feuilles de Bordeaux gives the specimen both its Latin designation and French name; its measured lettering forms a quiet visual base beneath the flowering branch.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration in Redouté’s hands was never merely diagrammatic. The plant had to remain recognisable and informative, but it was also organised according to the visual conventions of refined book illustration. Here, the main bloom is shown at its richest stage, while the buds introduce another phase of development; foliage, stem and thorns complete the account of the plant without distracting from the flower. Scientific description and decorative rhythm operate together.
That balance explains much of Redouté’s lasting appeal. Rosa Centifolia Burgundiaca rewards both immediate enjoyment of its muted pinks and greens and slower attention to vein, serration, petal and thorn. We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
