Continua a leggereClear Air (1901) by Wassily Kandinsky captures an early, luminous moment in the artist’s evolution—years before his pioneering leap into pure abstraction. Painted during his Munich period, the scene breathes with light and atmosphere, evoking the spirit of turn‑of‑the‑century Europe where artists explored mood, sensation, and the spiritual charge of color. In this transitional work, Kandinsky leans into an Impressionist language: airy brushwork, sun‑struck tones, and the gentle bustle of outdoor leisure that feels observed in real time.
This listing is for a museum-quality fine art print of Clear Air, produced by The Unique Maps Co. on your choice of acid‑free archival paper or premium artist’s cotton canvas. Prints are available in a range of sizes, with optional borders for easy matting, and framing services are offered to suit a variety of interiors. We can personalize your piece on request—think commemorative captions, dedication notes on the reverse, or custom scaling—so your print arrives ready to hang and enjoy.
Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) is celebrated as a founder of modern abstraction, yet his early years reveal a sensitive painter attuned to the emotive potential of color and the patterns of everyday life. After relocating from Russia to Munich in the late 1890s, he absorbed contemporary currents and began refining a visual language that would later transform into the radical, non‑objective compositions for which he is famed. Clear Air lets us witness that evolution: the artist still anchored to the observable world, but already reaching for the ineffable.
Historically, the painting resonates with the leisure culture of the fin de siècle—a moment when city dwellers flocked to parks and promenades, and artists embraced plein‑air methods to chase the shimmer of natural light. The scene’s gently animated figures, parasols, and garden pathways speak to that modern shift toward everyday subjects, capturing a fleeting interval rather than a staged narrative. In 1901, such explorations aligned Kandinsky with broader European experiments in mood, sensation, and spiritual inquiry through art.
Visually, Clear Air glows with a palette anchored in warm yellows, mellow oranges, and soft browns, creating an enveloping, sunlit hush. Pale whites—in the dresses—spark against the surrounding warmth, while rounded silhouettes of figures and parasols play off the firmer lines of benches and walkways. Loose, spontaneous strokes remain legible on the surface, enhancing the sense of breeze and movement and showing the artist at his most painterly and immediate. It’s the kind of print that brightens a room with quiet radiance—ideal for collectors who love early modernism, interiors that embrace earth tones, and anyone fascinated by the threshold where representation begins to dissolve into pure feeling.
A thoughtful gift for admirers of Kandinsky and Impressionism alike, this print suits birthdays, Christmas, Mother’s or Father’s Day, housewarmings, and anniversaries. It’s also a meaningful present for anyone who values art that balances the serene pleasures of outdoor life with the dawning energy of the modern age.
If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.
You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.
You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.
This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
