Four open blooms dominate the composition, their broad, finely articulated petals radiating from deep red centres, while a muted purple bud at the upper left introduces a quieter note. Set against a spacious creamy ground, the plant appears at once scientifically observed and carefully arranged: stems overlap, leaves turn at differing angles, and the slightly asymmetrical silhouette gives the study a natural, unforced rhythm.
The plate belongs to Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, a sumptuous florilegium devoted to plants selected as much for their visual appeal as for their botanical interest. Redouté was among the defining botanical artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, admired for reconciling exact description with graceful design. At a time when natural-history publications served both scholarly and cultivated audiences, his flower studies offered more than identification. They transformed individual specimens into composed portraits, preserving the structure of stems, foliage and blossoms without sacrificing luminosity or elegance.
A closer look
The eye is drawn first to the contrast between the warm yellow petals and the concentrated red of the flower centres. These darker discs act as small visual anchors within the otherwise airy arrangement. Delicate outlines define each petal, but the colour is not entirely flat: subtle tonal changes give the yellow corollas a soft sense of folding and curvature. The blooms overlap just enough to establish depth, while their differing orientations prevent the group from becoming rigidly repetitive.
Below and between the flowers, slender green stems form a loose structural framework. The foliage is rendered with particular attention to its narrow divisions and fine striations; greens shift from deeper, earthier tones near the lower part of the plant to lighter notes towards the tips. Small connecting stems and unopened buds reward closer inspection, revealing how carefully Redouté recorded the transitions between stages of growth. The upper-left bud is especially effective compositionally, extending the plant beyond the cluster of open flowers and leading the gaze towards the top of the page.
The pale background is an active part of the design. Its generous negative space isolates every contour, making the irregular edges of the petals and the branching habit of the stems readily legible. Along the lower margin, the finely written name Coreopsis elegans returns the decorative arrangement to its botanical purpose, identifying the specimen without competing with it.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
