Feigenspan’s Bock Beer (1895–1917), an anonymous advertising poster first created in 1895, builds its message around an exuberant conjunction of figure, drink and radiant colour. A smiling woman in an elaborately patterned blue dress raises a glass of beer before a large golden sun, while orange rays spread across the shallow background. Strong lettering anchors the display, turning the brewery’s name and the words “Bock Beer” into structural elements as prominent as the central figure.

Designed for the Feigenspan brewery and used into the early twentieth century, the poster belongs to a period in which American businesses increasingly relied upon bold printed graphics to establish recognisable identities in crowded urban markets. Breweries were particularly well suited to this new visual culture: names, figures, animals and memorable colour combinations could communicate a brand almost instantaneously. Here, decorative illustration and direct commercial language work together, reflecting the theatrical character of the late nineteenth-century American poster and lithographic trade.

A closer look

The woman occupies the central foreground, yet the composition is deliberately asymmetrical. Her dark hair, shaded features and cool blue costume gather visual weight towards one side, balanced by the bright disc of the sun and its expanding field of yellow and orange lines. The glass becomes a small but crucial focal point: pale highlights along its surface distinguish it from the surrounding costume and make the advertised drink legible even within the densely ornamented design.

Close viewing reveals how carefully the figure has been integrated into the poster’s decorative scheme. Floral patterning enlivens the blue dress, alternating intricate motifs with broader areas of solid colour. Delicate leaves curl around the figure, softening the transition between her silhouette and the radiating background. Subtle shadows beneath her chin and arms give her greater volume, while the rest of the poster remains largely flat and graphic, with clean edges and compressed depth.

A partially visible goat at the upper left adds both humour and a second point of character. Its brown-and-white fur and finely described facial hair contrast with the simplified rays behind it. The animal also draws upon the familiar linguistic association of bock beer with the German word Bock, meaning a male goat—a visual pun that became especially effective in brewing imagery. Across the lower portion, the emphatic lettering arrests the outward movement of the sunburst, ensuring that the eye returns from illustration to brand and product.

Context and significance

The poster’s visual hierarchy is unusually economical despite its decorative richness. The radiating sun attracts attention from a distance; the woman supplies expression and human presence; the raised glass identifies the object of enjoyment; and the large typography delivers the commercial message. Warm gold and orange are set against cool blue and deep brown, producing a high-contrast palette capable of holding its own amid competing advertisements.

Such imagery illuminates the changing place of advertising at the end of the nineteenth century. Commercial posters were no longer merely announcements but carefully orchestrated spectacles, using illustration, typography and recurring motifs to make products memorable. Feigenspan’s Bock Beer exemplifies that transition with particular energy: festive without becoming visually confused, richly decorated yet immediately readable, and animated by the witty appearance of the goat at the edge of the scene.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
