Two richly layered blossoms dominate the upright composition: a broad crimson flower opens towards the left, while a smaller, pinker bloom turns beside it. Serrated leaves, slender thorned stems and an emerging bud articulate the plant’s structure against a pale cream ground.
Redouté was among the most celebrated botanical illustrators of the early nineteenth century, particularly renowned for his studies of roses and other cultivated flowers. His work belongs to a tradition in which botanical publishing served scientific observation while also satisfying a growing appetite for refined images of garden plants. Here, clarity never becomes clinical. The identifying features of the rose are carefully preserved, yet tonal shading, poised asymmetry and generous empty space give the plate the composure of an independent floral portrait.
A closer look
The largest bloom sits just left of centre, its densely overlapping petals unfolding in concentric, irregular layers. Deep crimson gathers in the recesses, while rose-pink and paler highlights trace the curled edges. These minute changes in tone create a convincing impression of volume and a soft, velvety surface. Rather than reducing the flower to a neat diagram, Redouté records the slight variations that make its form appear living: some petals fold inward, others flare outwards, and the outermost edges loosen into a broad silhouette.
To the right, the second rose is less fully opened and somewhat lighter in colour. Its tighter construction offers a measured contrast to the expansive flower beside it, while the small bud near the upper right extends the sequence from enclosed growth to full flowering. The arrangement thus reveals several stages of the plant without resorting to a rigid comparative layout. Each element remains attached to the branching stem, preserving the natural coherence of the specimen.
Below the flowers, clusters of leaves spread in alternating directions. Fine veins run through their surfaces, and subtle shifts from light to dark green distinguish the raised centres from the serrated margins. Small thorns punctuate the stems—easy to overlook beside the vivid blossoms, but essential to the plant’s character. At the lower edge, the inscriptions identify the subject as “Rosa Gallica (Purpuroviolacea Magna)” and also give the French name “Rosier Éveque.” Their restrained placement leaves the spacious ground undisturbed.
Context and significance
Redouté’s enduring reputation rests on his ability to reconcile two different demands: the descriptive exactitude expected of natural-history illustration and the visual grace prized in luxury botanical publications. In this study, the rose is isolated from any garden setting so that its stems, foliage, buds and flowers can be read with unusual clarity. Yet the diagonal branching, unequal blooms and carefully balanced intervals of empty space prevent the specimen from feeling static.
The Gallic rose has a compact abundance particularly suited to Redouté’s method. Its many petals allow him to build form through delicate gradations, while the cool greens of the foliage sharpen the warmth of the crimson and pink blossoms. The result is at once informative and decorative: a close record of a named rose, but also an exceptionally attentive study of growth, texture and colour.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
