Continua a leggereGibson’s Rip Van Winkle Whiskey, an anonymous advertising design of 1882, encloses a convivial outdoor gathering within an elaborate circular frame. Four men sit around a wooden table beneath the spreading canopy of a tree, their mugs, animated expressions and brightly coloured clothes giving the scene the character of an illustrated tale. Deep reds and warm browns dominate, set against leafy greens and touches of beige and gold, while the product name curves assertively above and below the central vignette.
The title draws upon Rip Van Winkle, the enduring character created by Washington Irving in the early nineteenth century. Irving’s story of a man who sleeps for twenty years and awakens to a transformed America had become deeply embedded in popular culture by the time this advertisement appeared. Its familiar name gave the whiskey an immediate narrative identity: picturesque, old-fashioned and easily remembered. Such literary borrowing was well suited to late nineteenth-century commercial lithography, in which illustration, ornament and emphatic lettering worked together to distinguish brands in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
A closer look
The group beneath the tree forms the visual and social centre of the design. The men lean towards one another across the table, creating a compact circle of conversation reinforced by the larger round border. Their clothing introduces concentrated passages of red, blue and brown amid the surrounding greenery. Individual mugs are clearly differentiated, while a small stool at the lower left adds to the informal character of the gathering. On the ground nearby, a little brown dog lies at ease, an easily missed detail that makes the scene feel inhabited rather than merely posed.
The tree does much of the composition’s structural work. Its textured trunk rises beside the figures before branching into dense foliage across the upper left, sheltering the group and framing the open landscape beyond. In the background, a building with steps and a porch is partly visible, with paler hills extending into the distance. A woman stands near the building at upper right, looking towards the men; her upright figure and carefully described dress provide a quiet counterpoint to their seated cluster. The change from saturated foreground colour to lighter background tones gives the relatively crowded design a convincing sense of depth.
A floral ornament runs around the circular border, mediating between the pictorial scene and the bold commercial lettering. “GIBSON’S RIP VAN WINKLE” commands the upper portion, while “WHISKEY” anchors the design below. The hierarchy is immediate: the literary brand name first, the product second, and between them a richly detailed scene that rewards slower inspection. Rather than treating text as a caption added to an illustration, the anonymous designer binds typography, narrative and decoration into a single emblem-like composition.
Context and significance
Advertising of this period frequently relied on more than a straightforward representation of the goods being sold. Colour lithography made it possible to create promotional imagery with strong tonal contrasts, intricate ornament and an almost painterly wealth of detail. Here, the drinking scene supplies atmosphere without showing the product in isolation: sociability, leisure and storytelling become part of the brand’s visual world. The result sits between trade label, poster and popular illustration, reflecting an era in which commercial graphics borrowed freely from literature and genre painting.
What remains especially engaging is the tension between instant recognition and close observation. The circular structure and forceful lettering communicate at a glance, but the porch, distant hills, varied mugs, patterned dress and resting dog gradually turn an advertisement into a small narrative tableau. It is this combination of graphic directness and anecdotal detail that gives the design its distinctive late nineteenth-century character.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x16in (40x40cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
