Continua a leggerePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Ixia hyalina, published in 1802, presents the plant as both a flowering specimen and a complete botanical structure. A slender green stem rises from an exposed brown bulb into a loose cluster of pink blossoms, while narrow leaves curve upwards around it. The composition is exceptionally spacious: set against a pale, unadorned ground, every bud, petal and root filament remains distinct, yet the plant retains the grace and animation of something observed in growth.
The study belongs to the celebrated sequence of botanical illustrations Redouté produced between 1802 and 1816, a period of intense European interest in recording plants introduced through expanding horticultural networks. Often described as the “painter to the flowers”, Redouté brought together scientific clarity and an unusually refined sense of presentation. Rather than treating classification and beauty as competing aims, his work demonstrates how closely they could coincide: botanical information is conveyed through elegant contour, controlled colour and a composition in which the specimen is given almost portrait-like presence.
A closer look
The strongest colour gathers at the top of the stem. Rose-pink petals open into delicately modelled flowers, their tones shifting from paler illuminated areas to deeper pink in the folds and overlaps. Several smaller buds at the upper left introduce different stages of development, preventing the flowering head from becoming too regular. Fine tonal transitions give the petals volume without sacrificing the crispness necessary for botanical description.
Below the blossoms, the leaves form a second, quieter rhythm. Their long green blades arch in opposing directions, directing the eye back towards the central stem. Subtle veins and darkened edges articulate their structure, while the alternation of straighter and more curved forms gives the plant a natural asymmetry. Redouté’s restraint is particularly effective here: the leaves are detailed enough to be studied, but never burdened by unnecessary surface description.
At the lower centre, the exposed bulb changes the character of the plate. Earthy brown and muted beige replace the clearer greens and pinks above, and a network of fine roots spreads beneath it in wiry lines. This underground anatomy grounds the graceful flowering stem in the practical realities of plant growth. A faint supplementary outline near the lower right offers another fragment of observation, while the generous blank space around the specimen preserves the clarity of each element. Along the bottom margin, the printed identification reads “Ixia Hyalina, Ixia demi-transparent”, accompanied at the left by the attribution “J. Redouté pinx.”
Context and significance
Redouté worked within a botanical tradition shaped by both scholarly taxonomy and elite horticulture. His early nineteenth-century publications appeared at a time when newly cultivated and imported plants were objects of scientific inquiry, private collecting and public fascination. The isolated specimen on a clear ground answered the need for legibility, allowing the plant’s habit, foliage, flower and bulb to be considered together. At the same time, the carefully balanced placement of those parts transformed a documentary plate into a poised decorative composition.
Ixia hyalina is characteristic of Redouté’s ability to make close observation appear effortless. Its interest lies not only in the luminous pink flowers, but in the measured passage from blossom to leaf, stem, bulb and root. Seen as a whole, the plant becomes a complete visual argument: delicate above ground, intricate below it, and rendered with equal attention to scientific distinction and formal beauty.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
