August Macke places two orange-brown cows prominently in the foreground, while beyond them a white sail crosses intensely blue water and small figures occupy the surrounding landscape. Trees, fields and buildings are compressed into interlocking passages of green, blue, yellow and red. Rather than pursuing naturalistic detail, Macke gives each element a simplified, emphatic presence: the cows become weighty shapes, the sail a bright geometric accent and the distant buildings flashes of warm colour among the foliage.
Macke was a leading figure within Der Blaue Reiter, the German Expressionist circle whose artists explored how colour and form might operate with greater freedom from conventional representation. His paintings frequently found their subjects in ordinary modern experience—gardens, parks, promenades and excursions—yet transformed such scenes through rhythmic construction and heightened colour. Here, rural life and waterside leisure coexist without drama. The familiar ingredients of a pastoral landscape are retained, but reorganised through the distinctly modern visual language of early twentieth-century European painting.
A closer look
The foreground is anchored by the two cattle, one standing and the other lying down. Their broad, stylised bodies are built from rust orange, warm brown and darker patches, with lighter touches across their foreheads catching the apparent sunlight. A sharp note of yellow-green grass around their feet intensifies the warmth of their colouring. Below and around them, loosely handled ground suggests a rough path or open pasture rather than describing every contour of the terrain.
Behind the animals, the scene opens abruptly onto water. The small white sail is one of the palest and most clearly defined forms in the composition, standing out against varied blues laid down in gentle horizontal strokes. These changes of tone give the water a sense of depth and movement while keeping it integrated with the painting’s larger pattern. The boat’s triangular shape also provides a crisp counterpoint to the heavier, rounded bodies of the cows and the irregular masses of vegetation.
The upper part of the composition is densely layered. Green trees overlap bright fragments of architecture, including a red-and-beige structure at the right that reads as a house or barn. Strong vertical trunks along the left edge help frame the view, while horizontal bands farther back suggest receding hills or additional stretches of countryside. Warm reds and oranges repeatedly surface within the prevailing greens and blues, preventing the distance from becoming passive. Even the smallest buildings participate in the colour rhythm rather than functioning merely as background description.
Context and significance
Der Blaue Reiter emerged amid a wider European reassessment of pictorial space, natural colour and the descriptive obligations of painting. Macke’s approach was notably open and luminous: recognisable people, animals and landscapes remain legible, but their forms are pared back and held together by colour contrasts. In this scene, depth is created through overlap and tonal variation, yet the surface retains a decorative directness. Foreground, water and distant settlement can each be read spatially, while also forming a near-abstract arrangement of blocks, curves and diagonals.
That balance between observation and simplification gives Landscape with Cows, Sailboat, and Figures its particular vitality. It is at once pastoral and modern, calm in subject but energetic in construction. Details reward attention—the pale marks on the cattle, the shifting blue around the boat, the brief red accents among the trees—yet the painting’s strongest impression comes from the way these separate elements are gathered into one bright, rhythmic field.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x16in (40x40cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
