Three open blooms dominate the upper half of the composition, their ruffled petals shifting from saturated orange to softer yellow-orange at the edges. Small pink accents mark their centres, while the pale, unoccupied ground gives every stem, leaf and unfolding bud exceptional clarity.
The plate belongs to Redouté’s celebrated Choix des plus belles fleurs, a project whose title translates as “Selection of the Most Beautiful Flowers”. Redouté was among the defining botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, admired for images that served the demands of plant study without sacrificing grace or decorative refinement. At a time when botanical publications brought the expanding knowledge of cultivated and collected plants to a wider audience, his flower studies demonstrated how scientific observation and artistic judgement could reinforce one another.
A closer look
The composition rises from a compact cluster of leaves into slender, branching stems. Below, the foliage forms a cool green counterweight to the warm blossoms: elongated leaves overlap around the central stalk, their edges firmly described and their vein patterns picked out with fine lines. Subtle tonal changes suggest the slight curvature of each leaf, distinguishing surfaces turned towards the light from those angled away. Although the plant is carefully ordered on the page, it does not appear rigid; stems lean gently to either side, creating an asymmetrical, naturally growing rhythm.
Above this leafy base, the flowers open at different angles. The largest blossom faces almost directly outwards, making its layered structure especially legible, while the neighbouring flowers turn away just enough to reveal the depth and overlap of their petals. Redouté’s shading is restrained but remarkably effective. Minute transitions from deep orange through coral and pale gold give the petals a soft, nearly velvety appearance, and the pink rings at their centres sharpen the internal geometry of each bloom.
Smaller buds appear among the open flowers, introducing another stage of the plant’s development without disrupting the clarity of the study. The generous cream-toned space around the specimen is equally important: it isolates the silhouette and allows the branching structure to be read from rootward leaves to uppermost bloom. At the lower edge, the cursive label “Lychnis grandiflora” identifies the specimen while also completing the plate’s elegant visual balance.

Botanical illustration occupied a distinctive position in early nineteenth-century visual culture. Such plates were expected to record recognisable plant structures, yet they were also composed for readers who valued flowers as objects of cultivation, connoisseurship and aesthetic pleasure. We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
