Her body occupies almost the full height of the composition, yet the bowed head and inward-turning pose give the figure a markedly private presence. Warm pink, beige and muted yellow flesh tones emerge against the cooler background, while the headscarf forms a crisp visual accent around the face. Rather than pursuing anatomical exactitude, Macke builds the body from broad curves, patches of colour and visible strokes.
The painting belongs to the experimental climate from which German Expressionism developed in the early twentieth century. Macke became a leading figure associated with Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based group formed the following year, in 1911. Like several artists in that circle, he explored how colour and simplified form might carry a force independent of naturalistic description. His work is often distinguished, however, by its interest in everyday experience and by a decorative clarity that can temper Expressionism’s more agitated tendencies. Here, the traditional subject of the nude becomes an exercise in chromatic structure as much as a study of the human figure.
A closer look
The sitter is positioned centrally but not rigidly symmetrically. Her slightly lowered head begins a descending movement through the shoulders and torso, before the composition opens sideways along the bent body and the fabric beneath her. The pose is compressed within the portrait format, creating intimacy without elaborate narrative or setting. Subtle shadow beneath the arms and along the torso gives the figure weight, while the curve of the shoulder is modelled through changes in colour rather than a conventional sequence of light and dark.
Macke’s palette creates the painting’s principal tension. Pale pink near the shoulders shifts towards ochre and muted yellow across the torso; around it, deep greens pass into vivid blue. These warm and cool areas meet directly, sharpening the figure’s contours without relying on hard, continuous outlines. In the lower part of the composition, blue drapery gathers into loosely described folds. Its energetic strokes contrast with the steadier expanses of skin, while a strong red form at the lower left counterbalances the darker greens and blues above.
The headscarf is a small but decisive element. Its outlined edges separate it from the warmer face and hair, directing attention towards the sitter’s inclined head. Patches of lighter colour within the hair and delicate tonal shifts around the face prevent this focal area from becoming flat. Elsewhere, the background remains only partially descriptive: layered strokes and softened shapes suggest surrounding space without fixing it as a clearly identifiable interior. Figure and setting consequently feel bound together by the same rhythmic handling of colour.
Context and significance
Made shortly before Der Blaue Reiter was formally established, Naked Girl with Headscarf stands at a fertile point in Macke’s development. European avant-garde painting was challenging inherited ideas of modelling, perspective and local colour, and Macke translated those innovations into compositions that retained an unusual directness. The body here is recognisably present and substantial, but its visual coherence depends upon adjacent colour zones and simplified contours rather than academic finish.
That balance between observation and transformation gives the painting its particular character. The bowed pose remains quiet and self-contained, while the surrounding colour is active, even insistent. Macke does not dissolve the sitter into abstraction; instead, he allows greens, blues, pinks and reds to reorganise the familiar subject of the seated nude into a concentrated study of colour, surface and human presence.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
