Olana from the Southwest (ca. 1872) by Frederic Edwin Church captures the artist’s beloved hilltop estate in New York at a moment of glowing, late-day light. A leading voice of the Hudson River School, Church spent the early 1870s shaping Olana into a total work of art—an environment where architecture, gardens, and sweeping vistas were composed with a painter’s eye. In this canvas, he turns his estate itself into subject and stage, balancing human design against the breadth of the surrounding landscape to evoke wonder, serenity, and the sublime.

This listing is for a museum-quality fine art print of Church’s painting, produced by The Unique Maps Co. Choose from acid-free archival paper or luxurious artist’s cotton canvas, both printed with long-lasting pigment inks to preserve the work’s luminous atmosphere. Offered in a range of sizes, with optional framing and matting, each print can be personalized with a title plate, inscription, or custom sizing to suit your space. Our team can also advise on framing finishes that complement the artwork’s warm palette.

Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900) was one of the foremost American landscape painters of the 19th century and a central figure of the Hudson River School. A student of Thomas Cole, Church became renowned for panoramic compositions and masterful light effects—skills honed through extensive travel and meticulous observation. By the time he painted this view, Church had woven his artistic sensibility into the very fabric of Olana, turning the estate into a living studio overlooking the Hudson River Valley.

Olana from the Southwest is notable for the way it stages a dialogue between architecture and nature. Seen from a vantage that heightens the villa’s prominence, the composition reveals the estate’s carefully planned setting—gardens, paths, and planted slopes leading the eye upward—while the wider valley and distant hills suggest an expansive world beyond. The result is a poetic synthesis of the made and the natural, a hallmark of Church’s mature vision in which landscape becomes both subject and metaphor.

The palette here is quietly radiant: warm oranges and sunlit yellows bathe the house and hillside, while earthen browns and soft greens settle the composition into a tranquil equilibrium. Church’s brushwork is expressive yet controlled; the foliage is textured and lively, while the sky remains velvety and serene. Subtle contrasts—smooth heavens against crisp vegetation, architectural edges against soft, receding distance—guide the viewer toward the estate and then outward into the broad vista. These harmonies of light and color make the piece especially compelling for interiors seeking warmth, historical character, and a sense of place.

A timeless choice for lovers of American art, landscape design, and architecture, this fine art print makes an inspired gift for housewarmings, weddings, Mother’s or Father’s Day, Christmas, or for anyone who has visited—or dreams of visiting—the Hudson River Valley and the storied grounds of Olana.

If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind a different size, a different colour, a special frame then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

My maps are extremely high quality reproductions of original maps.

I source original, rare maps from libraries, auction houses and private collections around the world, restore them at my London workshop, and then use specialist giclée inks and printers to create beautiful maps that look even better than the original.

My maps are printed on acid-free archival matte (not glossy) paper that feels very high quality and almost like card. In technical terms the paper weight/thickness is 10mil/200gsm. It's perfect for framing.

I print with Epson ultrachrome giclée UV fade resistant pigment inks - some of the best inks you can find.

I can also make maps on canvas, cotton rag and other exotic materials.

Map ageing

I have been asked hundreds of times over the years by customers if they could buy a map that looks even older.

Well, now you can, by selecting Aged before you add a map to your basket.

All the product photos you see on this page show the map in its Original form. This is what the map looks like today.

If you select Aged, I will age your map by hand, using a special and unique process developed through years of studying old maps, talking to researchers to understand the chemistry of aging paper, and of course... lots of practice!

If you're unsure, stick to the Original colour of the map. If you want something a bit darker and older looking, go for Aged.
