Issued in 1935 by the U.S. Geological Survey, the map titled “Beaver Creek” captures a finely observed portion of northeastern Tennessee and adjoining Virginia at a moment when roads, towns, and rural landscapes were being reshaped by modern infrastructure. Classified as an Advance, Planimetric sheet, it places particular emphasis on the practical geography of settlement: highways, local roads, waterways, community outlines, and named places are rendered with the clarity for which the USGS became renowned. Bristol, Tennessee, anchors the map, with Beaver Creek and neighboring streams giving structure to the surrounding countryside. The result is both a working governmental document and a historical portrait of a borderland region whose transportation corridors, valleys, and communities would continue to evolve throughout the twentieth century.

The U.S. Geological Survey brought to this map the institutional precision that made its work indispensable to engineers, geologists, planners, and local authorities. Founded in 1879, the USGS developed a national cartographic language for reading terrain, water systems, and human occupation, and by the 1930s its maps were essential tools in an era of highway building, resource management, and regional planning. The “Beaver Creek” sheet reflects that disciplined approach: settlements are positioned within a coherent network of roads and streams, while the landscape is organized with restrained, legible symbology. Its planimetric character gives the map a directness that is especially appealing, revealing the bones of the region—routes, boundaries, waterways, and places—without ornamental distraction.

Bristol is the great cultural landmark of the sheet, not merely as an urban center but as one half of the celebrated Twin Cities of Bristol, Tennessee, and Bristol, Virginia. Straddling the state line, Bristol has long occupied a distinctive position in Appalachian geography, commerce, and culture. Its roads and approaches shown here illuminate the city’s role as a regional hinge, connecting rural communities, creek valleys, and intercity routes across the Tennessee-Virginia border. Historically, Bristol is famed as the “Birthplace of Country Music,” a title rooted in the influential 1927 Bristol Sessions, which helped launch commercial country music. Seen through this 1935 map, the city appears both as a transportation node and as a cultural crossroads.

The map’s visual language is clean and functional, with subtle color distinctions and careful linework guiding the eye through the region’s terrain and infrastructure. Greens and tonal variations suggest the character of the land, while road networks, waterways, and settlement patterns are drawn with the precision typical of USGS mapping. Beaver Creek and nearby streams trace natural corridors through hills and valleys, helping explain the location of roads, communities, and agricultural settlement. The cartography offers a quiet lesson in Appalachian geography: movement follows watercourses and valley floors, while uplands shape the spacing of towns and routes. Even without dramatic embellishment, the sheet conveys a strong sense of place through its measured depiction of land and access.

As a 1935 snapshot, “Beaver Creek” is especially valuable for understanding the region before later suburban expansion, highway modernization, and land-use change transformed the Bristol area. The map records villages, rural roads, and transportation links as they stood during the Depression-era South, when federal mapping served both scientific inquiry and practical governance. Its depiction of roads and highways reveals the framework upon which later development would build, while its streams and valleys preserve an older environmental logic that continued to shape settlement. For collectors, the appeal lies in this layered historical intelligence: a map of modest Appalachian geography that quietly connects federal cartography, regional infrastructure, border-state identity, and the cultural landscape surrounding one of America’s great music cities.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
