Linee guida generali sulle dimensioni

Published in 1922 from 1914 survey work, “Capitola” is a finely observed USGS topographical map of the central California coast at a 1:62,500 scale. Centered on the seaside resort town of Capitola and the nearby community of Aptos, it captures a moment when Monterey Bay’s northern shore was poised between rural landscape, resort development, rail connection, and coastal settlement. The Pacific Ocean forms the grand western and southern presence, while Soquel Cove, Aptos, and the approaches toward Santa Cruz situate the map within one of California’s most alluring littoral regions. Its title is spare in the disciplined USGS manner, yet the sheet is rich with early twentieth-century evidence of roads, railways, coastal trails, waterways, and the subtle geometry of human occupation.

The map was produced by the United States Geological Survey, whose topographic program transformed American cartography by bringing scientific consistency to the mapping of terrain, settlement, and natural resources. By the early 1900s, USGS quadrangles had become indispensable tools for engineers, land managers, geologists, travelers, and local authorities, translating varied landscapes into a precise visual language of contours, symbols, and measured elevation. In “Capitola,” that language is particularly elegant: contour lines articulate the folds of hills and valleys, while color-coded elevation and shaded relief give the coastline and inland slopes a palpable sense of depth. The result is not merely a practical survey, but a disciplined portrait of place, balancing scientific clarity with the quiet beauty of California’s coastal topography.

Capitola itself, one of California’s oldest seaside resort communities, appears here within its broader geographic setting, linked by roads and railways to Aptos, Soquel, and the larger sphere of Santa Cruz. In the early twentieth century, this stretch of coast was shaped by recreation, agriculture, timber, transportation, and the growing appeal of oceanfront living. The map records that world before later waves of suburban expansion and intensified coastal development altered the landscape. Aptos, now closely associated with residential neighborhoods and access to beaches and redwood country, is shown as part of a more open regional pattern. The mapped roads, rail alignments, and coastal routes reveal how movement through the area depended on the contours of valleys, creek corridors, and the curving shore of Monterey Bay.

The natural features are among the map’s most compelling elements. Monterey Bay opens broadly across the sheet, with Soquel Cove and the Pacific coastline providing a dramatic meeting point between land and sea. Inland, the terrain rises and falls in a sequence of ridges, drainage lines, and valley bottoms, rendered through the USGS contour system with striking legibility. Waterways such as Arroyo Cojo and El Rio del Pajaro connect the mapped landscape to older Spanish and Mexican place-name traditions, preserving linguistic traces of California’s layered past. Bolsa Nueva, too, evokes the rancho-era geography that preceded American statehood. These names, set within the measured precision of federal surveying, give the map a distinctive historical texture: part scientific document, part archive of regional memory.

Viewed today, “Capitola” offers a refined record of a coastal California landscape before a century of environmental and urban transformation. Housing developments, changing land use, expanded transportation corridors, and shifting relationships to the shoreline have all reshaped the Capitola and Aptos region since the map’s survey in 1914. Yet the essential drama remains visible in this topographical rendering: the sweep of Monterey Bay, the intimate coves and coastal margins, the undulating inland hills, and the routes by which communities connected across difficult terrain. Its restrained USGS styling gives the map an enduring sophistication, inviting close reading rather than spectacle. For collectors drawn to California history, coastal geography, or the artistry of scientific cartography, it is a quietly magnificent portrait of place.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
