Titled “Galveston,” this United States Geological Survey map presents the storied Texas island city and its surrounding coast at the notably detailed scale of 1:31,680. Dated 1933 and carrying a 1943 imprint, it belongs to a period when federal mapping combined scientific precision with urgent practical value for navigation, planning, engineering, and defense. The map captures Galveston as a low-lying Gulf Coast metropolis shaped by water on every side: the Gulf of Mexico to the south, Galveston Bay to the north, and the vital maritime approaches of Bolivar Roads nearby. Its fine topographical language records a landscape where even slight changes in elevation mattered, making the island’s beaches, bay margins, and urban grid especially legible.

The mapmaker, the United States Geological Survey, had by this time become one of the most authoritative cartographic institutions in the world. Founded in 1879, the USGS transformed American mapping through standardized surveys, careful fieldwork, and a commitment to depicting both natural and human-made features with clarity. In a coastal setting such as Galveston, that discipline is especially compelling: railways, roads, shorelines, piers, channels, and settlement patterns are all rendered as part of a single geographic system. The result is not merely a map of a city, but a scientific portrait of a working coastal environment. Its measured style reflects the USGS ideal that accurate mapping could serve geology, commerce, infrastructure, public safety, and national development alike.

Galveston Bay dominates the northern reach of the map, while Pelican Island, Offatt Bay, Ayers Bay, Fort Point, and Bolivar Roads mark the intricate meeting of harbor, island, and open sea. These names evoke the maritime character that long defined Galveston’s economy and identity. Bolivar Roads, the deep-water passage between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula, was central to shipping and naval access, while Pelican Island would become increasingly associated with port facilities and industrial development. The Gulf coastline, drawn with crisp precision, underscores the island’s exposure to surf, storm, and tidal movement. In this landscape, geography is destiny: every pier, causeway, and shoreline curve speaks to Galveston’s relationship with commerce and vulnerability.

Within the city itself, the map records Galveston’s gridded streets, transportation corridors, and developed districts with the restrained elegance typical of USGS topography. Roads and railways trace the practical skeleton of the city, linking residential and commercial areas to the port and to the mainland beyond. Murdochs Pier and other shoreline features suggest the recreational and commercial life of the beachfront, while facilities around the harbor point to Galveston’s continued importance as a Gulf Coast entrepôt. The map also belongs to the era after the catastrophic 1900 hurricane, when Galveston rebuilt with extraordinary ambition, including its famous seawall and grade-raising projects. Against that background, the mapped city appears as both resilient and exposed.

What makes this map especially fascinating is the tension between precision and drama. Its contour lines are necessarily subtle in such a flat coastal terrain, yet those slight elevations carried enormous meaning in a place repeatedly tested by hurricanes and storm surge. The cartography turns beaches, bays, rail lines, roads, and urban blocks into evidence of adaptation: a city engineered, rebuilt, and continuously negotiated with the sea. As a historical document, “Galveston” preserves the island at a significant moment in the early twentieth century, after the great rebuilding campaigns and before later waves of postwar expansion transformed the Texas coast. It is a refined, information-rich view of one of America’s most distinctive port cities.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
