Titled “Blue Mountain,” this US Geological Survey map was compiled from 1954 data and issued with a 1958 imprint, capturing a mid-century portrait of one of New York’s most evocative Adirondack landscapes. At a 1:62,500 scale, it centers on Long Lake and the surrounding highlands, where water, forest, and mountain relief define the character of the region. The map’s green terrain tint and precise contouring convey a landscape that is both expansive and intricate: a country of ridges, basins, stream valleys, and lake shores. More than a practical survey, it is a record of the Adirondacks at a particular historical moment, before later decades of recreational development, conservation policy, and shifting land use further reshaped the area.

The US Geological Survey was the preeminent American institution for systematic topographic mapping, and this sheet reflects the clarity and discipline that made its maps indispensable to scientists, planners, engineers, foresters, and travelers. By the 1950s, USGS quadrangles had become essential instruments for understanding the physical structure of the United States, translating field observation, aerial photography, and survey control into elegant cartographic form. “Blue Mountain” belongs to that tradition: its measured grid, carefully labeled settlements, and finely spaced elevation contours transform rugged wilderness into a legible landscape. Yet the map never loses the romance of its subject. It is at once technical and atmospheric, presenting the Adirondack interior as a place of measurable heights, winding waters, and remote passages.

Long Lake forms the dominant presence on the map, its narrow north-south reach anchoring a network of lakes, ponds, streams, and mountain slopes. Nearby Blue Mountain Lake, Lake Raquette, Lake Elysia, Eagle Lake, Brant Lake, Sickle Pond, and Fish Creek Pond evoke the watery complexity of the region, where glacially shaped basins interrupt the forested terrain. The Moose River and Hudson River systems suggest the larger hydrological patterns that bind the Adirondacks together, carrying water from upland interiors toward broader regional watersheds. Contour lines gather densely around the higher ground, revealing steep ascents and folded ridges, while more open spacing indicates gentler valleys and shorelines. The result is a richly textured topographic composition of exceptional visual and geographic interest.

The settlements and travel corridors shown here add another layer of historical meaning. Long Lake and Minerva appear not merely as place names, but as nodes in a sparsely settled landscape shaped by logging, seasonal travel, outdoor recreation, and Adirondack tourism. Roads and trails, some rendered in dotted lines, trace routes through forest and mountain country, marking the practical pathways by which residents, surveyors, hunters, hikers, and vacationers moved through the region. In the 1950s, the Adirondacks occupied a distinctive place in American geography: protected yet inhabited, wild yet mapped, remote yet increasingly accessible. This map records that balance with unusual grace, showing a terrain where human presence is visible but still modest before the scale of water and mountain.

As a historical document, “Blue Mountain” preserves a geographic understanding of the central Adirondacks at a moment of postwar transition. The physical landforms remain ancient, but the interpretation of the landscape—its roads, named features, settlement patterns, and mapped trails—belongs unmistakably to the mid-twentieth century. Subsequent conservation measures, recreational infrastructure, changing forest management practices, and development around lakeside communities may have altered how the area is used and experienced. Here, however, the viewer encounters the region through the disciplined eye of the USGS: Long Lake stretched across the page, rivers threading through wooded valleys, mountain contours rising in quiet succession. It is a map of precision and atmosphere, equally appealing to collectors, historians, and admirers of the Adirondack wilderness.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
