Linee guida generali sulle dimensioni

Published in 1988 using survey data from 1958, the U.S. Geological Survey’s “Sanibel” captures one of Florida’s most distinctive barrier-island landscapes at a moment poised between seclusion, development, and conservation. Drawn at the intimate 1:24,000 scale, the map reveals Sanibel Island with the precision that made USGS quadrangles indispensable to scientists, planners, and travelers alike. The island’s long crescent form, set between the Gulf of Mexico and San Carlos Bay, is rendered through finely organized symbols, contour lines, wetland markings, and land-use tints. Beige developed areas and green vegetated tracts distinguish the human footprint from the island’s subtropical ecology, while the surrounding waters emphasize Sanibel’s identity as a place shaped by tides, currents, storms, and shorelines.

The U.S. Geological Survey brought to this map nearly a century of federal cartographic expertise. Founded in 1879, the agency became the nation’s authoritative source for topographic mapping, geology, hydrology, and natural-resource science. Its maps were not decorative fantasies but measured portraits of the American landscape, designed to make terrain, settlement, infrastructure, and environmental systems legible. In “Sanibel,” that disciplined approach is especially compelling because the topography is subtle: the island’s low relief, marshy margins, and coastal ridges require careful notation rather than dramatic mountain contours. The result is a map whose elegance lies in restraint—an exacting survey of beaches, roads, trails, wetlands, and waterways that together describe a fragile coastal world.

Sanibel Island dominates the sheet, but the map’s drama extends across the surrounding marine and estuarine setting. To the west and south lies the Gulf of Mexico, the open expanse that gives Sanibel its famous shell-strewn beaches and gently curving shoreline. To the north and east, San Carlos Bay forms a sheltered waterway linking the island to Pine Island, St. James City, Pink Island, and the broader coastal geography of southwest Florida. Captiva appears as part of the neighboring island chain, reinforcing the sense of a necklace of low sandy lands threaded through blue-green waters. The inclusion of aquatic preserves and marshy zones underscores the ecological importance of these bays, flats, and mangrove-fringed edges.

One of the most significant features shown is the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, now synonymous with Sanibel’s identity as a sanctuary for migratory birds, mangrove forests, and tidal wetlands. In the context of the 1958 survey, the map offers a fascinating record of land use before later waves of environmental regulation and coastal development transformed southwest Florida. Roads and trails trace the island’s emerging infrastructure, while open and vegetated areas point to the still-dominant natural systems that made Sanibel exceptional. Fort Myers and the mainland lie within the larger regional orbit, but the map’s focus remains insular and ecological: a narrow, vulnerable barrier island where settlement, wildlife habitat, and water meet in close balance.

The visual style is classic mid-century USGS: crisp, colorful, information-rich, and quietly beautiful. Land and water are clearly differentiated, while vegetation, marsh, beach, and built areas are organized into a readable hierarchy. The contour lines, though modest in their elevations, are especially valuable on a landscape where small changes in height can determine drainage, flooding, habitat, and development potential. This is not merely a map of place names; it is a scientific portrait of an island ecosystem. For collectors drawn to coastal history, Florida landscapes, or the golden age of American topographic mapping, “Sanibel” offers a richly layered view of a beloved island before modern pressures fully reshaped its shores.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
