A branching stem rises through a finely balanced arrangement of narrow green leaves, coral-red buds and fully opened pink flowers. The blossoms are concentrated towards the upper half of the composition, where their soft, overlapping petals emerge with unusual luminosity against an almost empty cream ground.
Redouté was among the foremost flower painters of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, admired for combining close botanical observation with the elegance expected of luxury flower books. His work was associated with some of the most cultivated circles in France, including the patronage of Marie Antoinette and Joséphine Bonaparte. In Choix des plus belles fleurs, plants were not treated simply as specimens to be catalogued: each was isolated and arranged so that botanical structure and ornamental character could be appreciated together. This oleander plate exemplifies that union of science and refinement.
A closer look
The composition has the informality of a living branch rather than the rigid symmetry of a diagram. Its central stem bends gently as leaves extend in alternating directions, creating a sequence of pointed, tapering forms around the rounder mass of the flowers. The deepest greens occur in the crowded centre, while paler tonal transitions along the leaves suggest their turning surfaces. Fine veins and carefully articulated edges prevent the foliage from becoming a single dark block.
Redouté gives particular attention to the different stages of flowering. On the left, the largest blossoms open broadly, their pink deepening towards the folded centres and fading to paler edges. To the right, tightly furled buds introduce sharper notes of coral and red. Smaller buds higher in the cluster are only beginning to separate, establishing a subtle progression from closed form to full bloom. The overlapping petals and leaves create convincing depth, yet the plate retains the clarity essential to botanical illustration: every principal element remains legible.
The surrounding negative space is as important as the wealth of detail. With no landscape, vessel or decorative border to distract from the plant, the oleander appears almost suspended on the page. At the foot of the plate, the concise labels “Nerium.” and “Laurier Rose.” identify the subject in botanical and French usage. The names “P. J. Redouté” and “Langlois” are placed discreetly nearby, preserving the visual calm of the specimen above.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
